Are any subscriptions required? Can motion detection be shut off and just stream live to laptop?

Yes , you need a subscription . It costs approximately 12 dollars a month . You can watch continuously. Motion detection notifies you when there is activity in zones you set up , but you can turn off the notifications . You can monitor different rooms . I have the older cameras on the Nest app ,and also have the Google home app. I am not so up to date with the new battery powered cameras , there were some issues with them at first .

Not home to measure but I am sure it is over 12 feet.

Is this compatible with both nest aware and the Google home app?

I selected the older version cameras , specifically so I could connect to the Nest app . The newer cameras might just connect to the Google home app .

Would this camera be triggered by dogs barking with a shared fence?

Yes it would .This camera is very sensitive and responds to birds chirping and kids playing and cars passing by .We might have ours set on sensitive. Nice video quality . I prefer this older model over the newer ones !
