what is the pole ( shaft ) made of ?

The handle is a round tube that is about 1 1/8" in diameter. It is not a solid tube. It appears to be plastic or maybe aluminum. The shovel is pretty sturdy for its weight. I have used it two years now in northern Illinois on my composite deck and it is doing the job. Does not scratch the decking.
