Barry der Menschenretterโa.k.a. Barryโthe most famous St. Bernard dog in history, tells the story of his life for the first time. Eight-thousand feet above sea level, in the treacherous pass in the Alps between Italy and Switzerland, the monks of the hospice of St. Bernard have, since the 11th century, kept dogs to help them rescue travelers lost in the snow. In time, these dogs became a breed unto themselves, named for the hospice. They are responsible for helping over 2,000 travelers who might otherwise have frozen to death. With great modesty, Barry tells not just about his own heroic exploits (saving over 40 lives, including that of a 12-year-old boy frozen in a cave), but about his daily life in the hospice, his close relationship with the brothers who train him, and about the other hospice hounds with whom he teams up to guide lost travelers and save lives. With realistic black-and-white illustrations by Tim Jessellโplus an appendix with information about St. Bernards, the Great St. Bernard Hospice, and much, moreโBarry's tale is perfect for dog-crazy middle-grade readers! daughter loved this book!
My 10 yr old daughter had to do report on a historical fiction book. She wasn't finding a book she wanted to read (they were mostly about people and she isn't interested in people, only animals), so off to search Amazon I went and found this book. She loved the book, it has sad parts, but that's how life is in reality. Plus the fact that it fit the teacher's criteria and my daughter's criteria was a HUGE benefit!

The big furry teddy bear!!
I chose this rating because it was such a great book. It had a lot of good information in it, for any child who had to do a book report on this kind of dog. I loved this book very much, it had HAPPY and sad parts in it, which made you want to keep reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs.

Wonderful but very sad book
My daughter loves this series. I love how they are based on true stories. But, this story is incredibly sad. It was very difficult for my daughter (2nd grade) to handle. She still loved the book and learned a lot from it, but spent much time in tears.

Great but could be a bit more child friendly
My little girl loved this book but she got to sad when there was the stabbing bit and when Michael died. She thought that having that job as a dog would be to heart breaking for her. Seeing people dead every day poor Barry! Getting stabbed poor Barry! Just a bit too much happing

Stocking Filler!
Bought as a Christmas gift for a St Bernard fan. Fun read, even if the ending of the hero (in the book) isn't quite what happened to the dog! Beautifully illustrated. Particularly liked the additional information about the stuffed Barry that is in the museum in Bern. Interesting addition to any St Bernard fan's collection. Would have liked it better as a hardback!
