Does it work without doing any exercise. Just sitting down and turning it on?

I've never done that, but immediately starts registering my heart rate as soon as I put it on. So I don't see why it wouldn't work for that purpose.

What are the main differences between the FT4 and FT7?

Hi Chelsea! Practically the 2 models have the same basic features heart rate monitor, what distinguishes FT 7 is that you can save the data on your computer or laptop through her polar site, and the other difference is that it has an option that is called "Energy pointer" that will determine the optimal intensity at which the maximum fat burning effect is achieved. In my opinion not much different from each other because I think they are very easy and convenient to use perfect for people who start training in any discipline or Gym with my personal training clients have always been a great tool to reach your goals . I hope you have served as something my humble response. blessings!!!!

Do I need to buy the gel?

No, you do not. The watch comes with a strap that goes around your chest to monitor your heart rate. No gel is needed for this watch to work.

What size strap comes with it?

This unit comes with the standard strap size; medium to xxl. This will fit 30 to 45 inches around.
