will this player work knowing its a 1080 tv ?

Yes, it will. You can play any DVD disc, including on a TV that is not 4K HD.

Will this play standard dvds and cds?

well, SAMSUNG UBD - M7500/ZA 4K UHD manual states that "Your Ultra HD Blu-ray Player can play content located on Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/CD discs, USB devices, PCs, and on the Web. To play content located on your PC, you must connect the PC and the product to your network" so... there is your answer... please reference http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201808/20180828100811442/UBD-M7500_ZC_FullManual_01_ENG_180808.pdf

My samsung tv already upscales to 4k and there's no option to disable it. What happens when both my tv and this player are upscaling regular blurays?

having the 2017 Samsung 55 inch 8000 4k uhd paired with this player, I've had no issues. The picture and sound are pretty amazing for the price.

Does the M7500 model requires a direct hook up to an Internet modem?

It supports a wired internet connection. It does not have Wi-Fi.
