Medline Ultra Lightweight Transport Wheelchair for Adults, Foldable, 19-Inch Seat Width, Blue Frame, Black Upholstery

We purchased this for my 89 year old father who is losing strength in his legs and can't walk for long distances. He's in the early to middle stages of dementia and it's important for him to be included in regular activities like grocery shopping, trips to the movies, museums with the great grandchildren etc. because the varied input of places outside the home stimulate his mind and time with familiar folk helps him stay in a positive frame of mind. Since he can't navigate the motorized carts at the grocery store and you cannot rely on various other venues having wheel chairs for you to borrow, we decided to get something that we could easily bring along wherever he goes with us. This transport chair is perfect! It is MUCH lighter than any of the conventional wheel chairs I looked at when visiting a used medical equipment thrift store the next town over. And, after looking at various transport chairs available there and here on Amazon, it was clear that this chair is also quite a bit lighter than other transport chairs I considered. The difference in weight is important to me because I have arthritis in my lower spine and and hands, this limits the amount of weight I can lift - especially a lift & twist movement such as needed when pulling large items in and out of the trunk of a car. The substantial difference in weight between this very sturdy transport chair and regular wheelchairs (with the big wheels adding much to their total weight) is quite significant. I am grateful for the light weight every time I go to put this very sturdy transport chair in my car. Frankly, the light weight & sturdy construction alone were worth the investment in this chair, but it has other features that we've come to appreciate. One important feature of this transport chair, besides the light weight, is that it was engineered to fold up very compactly. This means it's easy to fit in the back seats or trunks of smaller cars, and be easily loaded/unloaded by smaller statured people (like Dad's home helper who is about 5' 2"). In addition, the steps for folding or unfolding it are simple and easy to do (even for those with arthritic hands like mine). I really have come to appreciate the obvious thought and care that went into designing this transport chair. Although we keep the manual tucked in the convenient pocket on the rear side of the seat's backrest (so it'd be easy to find when someone new is handling the chair, like family members taking Dad on a special outing or a substitute caregiver), most people never even bother to read even the simple instructions). For example, folding it up involves basically three basic steps: 1. Lift off the two foot rests, 2. Unlatch the "handlebars" (what you push the chair with) & fold them down, 3. Pull up the seat in the middle - one hand each on the front & back. To set it up is essentially the reverse. Since we got it several months ago, no one who has loaded in its compact state has had any trouble with figuring out how to set it up for usage, and having done that, had no trouble folding it up to stow in the car. There are other features of this chair that are important to know about. For example, the adjustable foot rests were included in the price we paid (unlike some of the cheaper, heavier transport chairs) - and do NOT just assume that heavier weight means sturdier!). Adjustability is very important, no matter the height of the person who will be seated in it. Another is the way the armrest angle off towards the front of chair. This feature allows you to roll the chair in closer to a table than other designs, which makes it much easier to reach your dinner plate, drinking glass and utensils at a restaurant. Once close in, set the easy to use foot brakes to keep the chair in place. That reminds me of some important safety practices that we always impress on anyone who's taking Dad out with his chair - and you might want to also, no matter what chair you choose: Always set the foot brakes when parking the chair (such as at a restaurant or the movies). Also, before someone gets in or out of the chair, make sure the brakes are set and that the footrests are swung back out of the way (on the sides of the chair.) I should point out that, as a transport chair, it is specifically designed for someone who will have an attendant of some kind to push him/her about at all times. This makes it's function different from a traditional wheelchair where the person in the chair can move themselves along using the circular grips on each wheel. It's an important difference in functionality that must be considered at the outset. If a transport chair is what you need, I can honestly say that we have been really happy with this transport chair and hope that this review makes clear the reasons why.

I was moved to revise this review in light of some recent travel my wife and I did around Christmas. As I said in the original draft, she developed normal pressure hydrocephalus last winter, a condition that makes walking difficult if not impossible. Even with a walker she had problems. We bought this wheelchair to replace an old steel framed one that her mother had used. Getting the old one in and out of the cargo space in our small SUV was increasingly tiring, and when you have untreated NPH you make lots of trips to doctors and surgeons and radiologists several times a week, let alone just normal trips to the grocery store. This chair seemed the best compromise for weight and durability of the reviews on Amazon so we bought it last June. No wheel chair is a joy to use or transport but this has gotten the job done. We've used it on pea gravel driveways, across our hairdresser's lawn, and on short sections of decomposed granite and paved trails in the Colorado Rockies. It has held up. We've shopped with it at outlet malls and in clothing stores, taken it into many restaurants, hotels, hospitals, doctors' offices, and the like. We've never had a problem. I can see how the brakes might wear out if you must navigate steep grades a lot, but I suspect that would affect most wheel chairs. The brakes on this unit don't seem much different from most others we've checked out. And it's true that it could tip over backwards if you aren't careful - but that also is true for any transport wheel chair unless there's one out there with an anti-tip bar welded to the back frame - like they used to put on dragsters (not likely). We've been very lucky. My wife had a cerebral shunt installed a little while back and she's much more mobile than she used to be. She increasingly walks either unsupported or with a cane, so we weren’t using the chair much. That is, until we took a transatlantic cruise in mid-December from Lisbon to Miami. I had suspected we’d need it in the airports, as well as for the long hallways on the ship. It was excellent. I’m guessing we put about 3 to 4 miles on it on the ship, and maybe another mile of so in the airports at least. But the biggest test was the streets of Hamilton, Bermuda, which were, bluntly, awful. Cobblestones and cracked asphalt and concrete, very uneven ledges, uneven and rough “wheelchair ramps.” And then there was the cruise terminal itself, which was .probably a 20 foot ascent from the ship and maybe half a mile long. Lots of nominal “ramps” but they again were pretty crude. (The jetways were a challenge at times too.) The chair never failed us. I bought the NOVA Travel Bag for it, which made it child’s play to gate check it without worrying about the footrests getting lost. It fit snuggly in our cabin and made it through all the hallways, even past the stewards’ big carts. As I said before it probably isn't the right chair for everyone - my wife is small and not very heavy. But it's held up well, folds and unfolds very easily (stow and go clips are a plus, and we use the cupholder and back pockets too), and it gets us to places that we couldn't get otherwise. If you're in the market for whatever reason it deserves a very close look.

This is the best chair I have ever seen. It's not designed for self-use, but as far as the design its outstanding. Its super light, sturdy and best of all it totally folds up in a self contained fashion. Great value!!

So light weight, it's made my life easier! I can get it into the van with no effort and love it that the footrests clip onto the side , so I don't have to reconnect every time. My husband is 240 lbs. and no problem pushing him around. GREAT Choice, GREAT product !

I really love this transport chair which I purchased to take my mom around who at the age of 90 is no longer able to get far with her walker. It's light, easy to set up and close it up for carrying in your car. It fits in the back of our Toyota Matrix. The handles fold down, the legs flip back or can be removed, and the entire chair folds by pulling up on the handles of the seat. My mom is always pointing out red cars, so I love to refer to her transport chair as her red hot rod. My only critique for which I would have only knocked off 1/2 a star if I could is that the rubber clamp that catches the leg piece on one side doesn't catch and hold onto the leg. It's like a design flaw. The leg doesn't snap into it deep enough to stay in. It falls off as I pick up the chair to put in my car. It's not the biggest deal, but would be nice if it fit / worked right. Otherwise, I've taken my mom on walks through the local metro parks on some bumpy paths. We'll see how long the tires last! Overall, as a petite over 60 woman, it's easy to pick up, load, and use. And mom loves it. I also use it when we go to the movies, and place her in the wheel chair spot. She just stays in the transport chair instead of a theater seat.

I rarely write reviews, but I purchased this for my 92 year-old father and I have to say he loves it and I love it. It is so easy to fold, it’s lightweight and works like a charm. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for something to help with an elderly person. It makes it so much easier on the person who is helping as well as the elderly person who might not have that stability in walking.

This has been a blessing. Easy to put together and use. Lightweight and small so I can put it behind the drivers seat in the car. Strong enough for my husband to be in.

Love the light weight -- easy to lift into the car. The larger wheels on this model work very well. My wife says the ride is comfortable and she can sit for a long time with no discomfort. The build is sturdy. The foot rests are easily removable and the handle bars fold down to make the height small enough to fit in the backseat of a compact car or in a full sized trunk. Two cautions that apply to any transport chair: the handle bar height is uncomfortably low if you're pushing it and over 6 feet tall. Bending down to push the chair is hard on the shoulders. The wheels do not roll over 1/4" high thresholds when someone is in the chair. There is no way to lift the front wheels up while you're pushing it. It would be wonderful if there was a bar across the rear so you could leverage it like a handcart, but that is not possible with the collapsing design. Medline is a great brand. On a recent trip to a major city hospital complex, I saw dozens of transport chairs and hundreds of wheelchairs. Nearly all of them were Medlines. I may paint some stripes on the frame to make mine easier to find.

This wheelchair is light for transport but in the same time it's sturdy and comfortable.it comes in handy ,going to doctor or have to go out fast in stead of using my big chair. I'm very happy for it and not very expensive.
