Our gate bar is 1/2 in thick so is the gap big enough to take this? A previous one purchased was too narrow

Not quite sure what you mean. The gate and the post should form a flat(ish) surface when closed. The latch is screwed to the gate and the catch to the post. You can fix the latch so it does hook onto the latch.

What depth of bar would this keep please?

The depth of the latch is approx 1/2" but I'm using it with a bar of 1 1/4 " and it's works OK but the gate it's on is not used very much. I would have preferred it to be more than 1/2" for heavy use.

Replacement latch

This is extremely tiny and doesn’t look anything like the picture in shape. No dimensions provided. The gap on the latch is only 5mm so not wide enough to fit Wickes iron gate latch. Therefore of no use to me without considerable filing down and quite expensive for what it is. Check that your latch is thin enough before ordering. On the plus side 2 screws provided and prompt delivery. Disappointed.

A useful product

The latch slot is very shallow and narrow, so a purchaser may need to widen and deepen it to secure a normal sized latch securely. Works fine then.
