Can anyone tell me which fragrance is used for mice and snakes to deter them in the house ....this is what I was told but can not remember and also I

It is suggested that peppermint oil or peppermint fragrance is used to deter mice and rats. However it did not work when I tried. The rat seemed to even enjoy the smell as it did not stop him from entering the area I placed fragrance on cotton balls. I do not know about snakes cause I live in Hawaii and we don’t have them.
