Gold Medal Winner, Family Choice Awards Understanding Myself will encourage kids to notice just what their emotions are telling them about themselves, their friends, and family. Strong feelings and intense emotions are part of every pre-teens life. Understanding Myself is written especially for kids with intense emotions. This informative and practical guide will help kids know what do when their emotions get to be too much! Chock-full of cool psychology and info on emotions as well as real-life stories, useful quizzes, and fun facts, Understanding Myself will encourage kids to notice just what their emotions are telling them about themselves, their friends, and family. Can you feel sad and happy at the same time? Does anger really make you hot? Are you likely to be envious? Why is stuff so embarrassing? Review: Great book, Add context - My therapist recommended this to help me communicate with my first grader about embarrassment. It is written for a child to read, but although well written... I can't say a child would want to read a book about self discovery, even chapter by chapter. As a parent, it is a tool with good content to bring up within context. Perhaps we will read an excerpt together. I recommend a section to Hubby and ask him to touch on an item of two as well. I'd think it is very good for Dads. Personally, it is good for me for self discovery. Articulating emotions and better understanding self is never a bad thing. Promoting emotional intelligence is a wonderful gift... I also meditate (great quick apps out there). And am encouraging my six year old to do the same. Review: Why Do I Feel? - Why do I feel? That's a good question and one that's answered along with many others in this adorable book. Designed for kids but helpful to adults, Ms. Lamia leads us down a path of emotional intelligence. Emotions, also called emotional responses, are our brain's way of getting information to us for split second decisions. We're constantly bombarded by them, and learning what they mean is a great advantage in life. The younger the person learning, the better. Several are presented in 5 basic categories which are: self conscious, threatened, gloomy, elated and stormy. Clear definitions are written with details on how they affect a kid's life along with practical advice on dealing with them. Lots of kid quotes are sprinkled in and every chapter contains an insightful quiz for self-knowledge. I'm grateful for the help I received in making sense of my daily experiences (so THAT'S what comtempt is!) and my complicated relationships. Rating: 5 stars and a smile.

A Must Have for all Families
This is a fantastic book about our feelings. It is definately written for use by anyone who has ever been confused by trying to express their feelings. The book emphasizes clairty and excellent descriptions for the emotional range within many feelings. I highly recomend this book for anyone who is interested in understanding the degrees of feelings- You will certainly have much more clarity to express yourself accurately after you spend time with this great and helpful book. I think every family should have this book on the shelf for easy access.

Good coverage of topics
Understanding Myself; A Kid's Guide to Intense Emotions and Strong Feelings does a thorough job of discussing those topics, but I had hoped for more of the "questionnaire" style pages for kids to fill out. It is less interactive, and more reading than I'd hoped. However, as I said, it is thorough in its coverage of feelings and emotions. Overall, I'd say it's a good book, and I really like the questionnaires.

Not what I was expecting.
As a K-5 social worker, I love to find books I can give my 3-5 grade students that are at their level. This has good content, but the layout of the book and vocabulary is too difficult for many of my students. The text-heavy pages are overwhelming for most readers. The cover also makes it look like it's for younger readers, however, it is truly for 11 years and up. Therefore, it really doesn't get a lot of use in my office.

Totally adequate!
This book is more than I expected! Really friendly and according to readers age for their learning and understanding of their emotions, they way then work, their importance and how to manage them. As a clinical psychologist, working with emotion acceptance and management, I really loved it!

Surprised that I learned too!
I am happy I got this book to read with my son. I would like to raise a kid who is sensitive to other human beings as well as has respect for his own emotions. I was also hoping to help him use this understanding to reduce conflicts in life as he grows up. This is a very well written book and we read it together. I am impressed by how simply the concepts are laid out. Even as an adult, it is teaching me a thing or two. The author knows what she is talking about.

A great detailed and well laid out book
This book is really quite good. It's written with lots of detail and is probably for ages 8+. Some of the language is a little bit adult and you may need to help an under 11-year-old with some of the words if they're reading on their own, however very worthwhile read for any child who is dealing with emotions or worries. It is organised in sections with each emotion described with examples and some reasons why these emotions happen as well as quiz to understand if you have a tendancy to feel this emotion or not. My nine-year-old really enjoyed the quizzes and it provides a point of discussion and also opened my eyes to what she is actually worried about and wants to know more about. Unfortunately for me it's boys and emotions surrounding your feelings for them. I really like that on the cover page of each chapter for each emotion that there are lots and lots of different words to describe the emotion so while your child may not understand 'disgust' as an emotion, he or she will pick up another word and understand. I think this is going to really help my nine-year-old and also for me to understand her a bit better. I recommend this!
