Would this be a good chair to take to the beach?

yes I take mine to the beach everytime I go but the only thing bad is you cant lay on your stomach it don't lay flat but very comfortable

How about the taller folks...will this fit someone 6’5 comfortably or will the metal bar hit the calf?

Definitely not, I'm 5'10" and the middle of my head hits the bar on this chair and my ankles hit the lower bar. It's much smaller than a similar chair I had bought 15 years ago.

Where your legs go does it open up more then that ? Like to elevate your legs upwards

Yes. When you incline both the top and bottom incline and it becomes a very comfortable chase lounge. I love it.

Would this be comfortable for people in their 80s?

I could see how it might be comfortable for people in their 80s, however, I can also see how it would be difficult for them to get it back into the sitting position and out of the chair, that part can be a little difficult.
