Review: The Best Resource for Lupus Patients - This the best lupus resource. The book is written for patients by a doctor who researches and has specialized in treating lupus patients for decades. He tells you what lupus is, how it's diagnosed, all medical treatment options, depending on the level of your inflammation and organs impacted, the labs you must get regularly, how to have a productive conversation with your rheumatologist, the importance of working with a dermatologist, as lupus affects the skin, the one medication all lupus patients should be taking to lower your disease state, and he tells you the best way to eat to ruduce your levels of inflammation and put your lupus in remission. Dr. Thomas has even shared in his regular emails or in this book that he has female patients in their nineties, with lupus, who have followed all of his advice, which is contained in this book. The one recommendation that did not work for me was eating yogurt every day. It cause me severe flares and puffiness in my face. One of the very best pieces of information I gained from this book is taking an 81mg aspirin daily. I started doing that this week and I have been sleeping like a baby for the first time in decades. When I looked this up online it turns out inflammation comes from sleep loss and sleep loss causes inflammation, so when you put the inflammation out your body can rest and sleep deeply.

A Great Resource for lupus patients!
I have the first edition and the second addition comes with updates with new lupus medication informations, and it also comes with editing on each chapter by various top leading lupus doctors. The first edition was great and the second edition is greater with so much new edition! I love it! Here is a photo of my second edition with all the interesting points marked. This is a must haves for lupus patients and other autoimmune diseases such as Sjogrenโs syndrome, etc. It is so resourceful covering various topics from reasons, symptoms, meaning of the tests, various involved organs, medication information, and even the reason for the pain that patients experience. Iโve been suffering from lupus for 37 years, and seriously, all the problems I experienced are addressed in this book. One will experience aha moment when one delves into it. I am not kidding, you can find most of the answers in this book! I also would like to thank Dr Thomas for his care and passion for the patients. Each chapter is so well written that it is so approachable, engaging, and it is so practical for us patients. I can see that Dr Thomas really looked into each symptom and issue through a magnifying glass to address them and he carefully listens to the patients for their needs and what they are going through. I can totally relate to the topics and his suggestions when I read the book. Thank you so very much, Dr Thomas for writing Lupus Encyclopedia and educating us! You changed our lives! We love you!

This book has been WONDERFUL!! I have been suffering from Lupus and Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome. This book has finally brought me so many answers. The author is brilliant, compassionate and, is a fabulous writer. I am so encouraged by all the scientific data and research that went into this brilliant book. The author should receive an award for the comprehensive data, so eloquently documented and organized. This book answers so many questions that many of my doctors don't have time to answer during appointments, as they have many patients to attend to. This book has offered me peace of mind and, helps me prioritize what info I need to bring up with my doctors at appointments. Dr. Donald E. Information is power! Thank you Dr. Thomas!
I was diagnosed with lupus in 2007-three and a half years after the symptoms were so severe that I thought I could not go on. Not being dramatic. I had just finished chemo (2003) from aggressive breast cancer at 38. Had an amazing husband and two babies, 4 and 7 years old, who meant the world to me. But the pain and fatigue were overwhelming. There was little credible information about lupus accessible to non-medical professionals at the time. And what I did find did was vague and general and insufficient- it did not begin to address my questions or help me understand what I need to do to deal with this disease. My husband bought me Dr. Thomasโs Last book during a time when the wolf was not just on my heels, but actually taking a bite out of me. Panniculitis, pain, fatigue and feeling the CNS symptoms of cognitive impairment (why do we use the term โbrain fogโ to describe what is clearly impairment?) were hounding me and I could not find helpful, concrete and credible information anywhere - including on the myriad lupus websites that are so vague and unhelpful to someone with this disease. Thank you Dr. Thomas! Your book is so helpful and contains information on physical problems that you can have as a result of lupus that maybe your doctor did not mention, like the heart disease and gastrointestinal problems and the painful lesions of lupus panniculitis that very few sources even mention. You help people know their symptoms and pain are real and they really matters as people try to save their own lives, their families, and navigate our dysfunctional healthcare system. But thank you even more for the review of medications and their use and their side effects. I would like a little more information on ways to deal with side effects when you need the medication and have to take it, but it interferes with your life nonetheless. But this book is the most accurate, complete and helpful lupus reference book that I have encountered. I am grateful.

A must-have for people who may have or undiagnosed lupus!! Should be a requirement for doctors!!
For anybody diagnosed with lupus this book is amazing it has everything you need to know to help you with symptoms, to help you with doctor's appointments, to just help you try and find a future in your life. Systemic lupus is a hard diagnosis, even if you just have symptoms and you haven't received a diagnosis yet this book will help you tremendously I think every rheumatologist should have this book and maybe people wouldn't struggle for 4 years to get an accurate diagnosis. I highly recommend this book to people concerned they may have lupus. I think it should be required by every rheumatologist or specialist treating lupus to have this book. Honestly if a rheumatologist doctor doesn't have the lupus encyclopedia and aren't familiar with it, then i strongly suggest you find a rheumatologist who does.

Answers For Questions You Did Not Even Know You Had
This is a MUST PURCHASE for every person who has Lupus and for the parents of children with Lupus. Dr Thomas explains what lupus is and tests used to diagnose and monitor the disease. Lupus can attack any body part and multiple chapters detail how this happens for each body system. Other possible lupus complications are addressed. Lupus treatments, including new state of the art treatments, are described. The final part of the book discusses practical issues that the Lupus patient must deal with. The book describes itself as comprehensive which it truly is. Lupus is a disease that is with you every day of your life after diagnosis. I reference it often [ see the tabs in my photo above for sections I know I will return to frequently] for new symptoms, understanding what various lab tests measure and helping to me to determine when I am having an issue that should be brought to the attention of my doctor. Being written in a way that the non medical person can understand, the book gives you a way to become an informed, proactive patient prepared to cooperate with her medical team in facing the challenges of Lupus.

When it's good it's great, and
when it's bad, it's horrid. Lupus ended my medical career in my 40's. Thirty years on, I know a bit about the disease. A book like this is long overdue and, by and large, excellent. That said, I take serious exception to a couple of points. Its comments on fatigue are sophomoric at best. Fatigue is a core symptom and we DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT. We CANNOT MEAURE IT. (I suspect it is mitochondrial dysfunction.) Its comments about exercise are deeply offensive. You wouldn't tell a new amputee to go for a run, so don't tell a lupus patient to go exercise. They are struggling to stay groomed and fed. Making their kids a PBJ feels like climbing Mt. Everest. And as to questionnaires? Pts fill them out when they are tired, or can't remember, or when the nurse is pushing them to finish it in order to be seen. The data you get is suspect. GIGO. Garbage In Garbage Out. Those serious deficiencies do not take away from the clear explanations of lots of things.

Incredibly insightful and an easy read.
This book has pretty much everything you need to know that's written in a language most people can understand. It gives you plenty of real world examples so that you can visualize what they're talking about. Even though it's primarily about Lupus, it does briefly touch on other types of auto-immune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS and more. It explains why there is often a doctor discrepancy when it comes to getting a diagnosis, as well as why it can be tricky to diagnose period. As the medical community draws closer to finding answers, more questions get asked and this book explains all that. Very insightful and likely the only book you'll ever need on the subject.

If you are to ever purchase a book on this cruel illness, I would say this is the one. For the first time since my diagnosis, I feel like I have gained a little more control over my life. Everything you need to know is there - even if you are lucky enough to have a great team of doctors working with you, the knowledge this book contain is invaluable. Everything you need to know and do is made clear, explained, detailed, recommended. I cannot recommend it enough, and I actually thank my lucky stars I took a chance on this book.
