It is a treasure trove of information that exposes the reader to the realities of everyday life in Petrograd during one of its most tumultuous times. Statistics on crime lend an extraordinary explanation as to why Russia experienced a missed opportunity and was unable to transition into a democratic society. The dismantling of law enforcement and the inability to reestablish order lead to a chaotic state, which was ultimately exploited by the Bolsheviks. For those wondering why Russia fell to totalitarianism, it is not due to idealism, or the working class, or any romanticized socialist propaganda, but an inevitable outcome to an unfortunate reality.
