Dylon Washing Machine Fabric Dye Pod Intense Black, 350g, Packaging May Vary

Really good dye. Worked well. I dyed a pair of jersey trousers, a tee shirt, a pair of shorts and a small dress. The colour ended up a lovely Royal Navy , which I knew would happen (intentionally) as I put slightly more weight in. Even dye. Would recommend.

I bought this 'Espresso Brown' dye with the intention of dying two old cotton throws, each of which was approx 1.2m square, and which had previously been dyed bright orange several years ago. The total dry weight of fabric was about 1.6kg, which is greater than the maximum weight stated for one pod of dye, but all I wanted to do was to tone down the existing colour. I had expected that I might end up with a sort of terracotta shade, but wasn't really too concerned about the end result, so figured that it was worth a punt using a single dye pod. I gave the throws a quick pre-wash to leave them damp and then followed the pack instructions, emptying the contents straight into the machine drum as indicated for larger quantities of fabric, and putting it through two full cotton cycles, with detergent added in the second cycle. The end result is an even coverage, and the shade is a rich 'chocolate' brown, not much lighter than the shade indicated by the manufacturer, which was surprising given the excess weight of fabric I was using. There was no staining left behind in the machine or on the door seals, despite the alarmingly dark colour during the process. All in all the product was easy to use and produced better results than I expected. My only criticism is that the instructions are printed on a long narrow strip of paper in tiny letters less than 1mm high, and are in white on a black background, which makes it very difficult to read. My eyesight is fine for reading most things, but even with reading glasses on I also needed a magnifying glass to read the instructions properly.

I was dying a pair of tracksuit bottom with intense black. The process was easy and the colour is amazing. It’s a true deep black, full coverage and makes them look like new again. However…. lol…… The washing machine has taken a bit of a battering! One load was with the dye, second load was with the joggers and a washing capsule. Both were 2hr 50 washes. After second wash I sprayed and wiped the rubbers and then Put it on for an empty wash with extra washing product. It still had black coming off the rubber when I wiped it. I’m now on my third empty wash to try and get rid of it! It’s put me off as it’s using so much water and I don’t feel I can risk a load of washing until it’s clean. Really effective product. I used these for my black canvas Carhartt trousers which were very sun-faded and this worked a treat. This restored it to its original darkness which was perfect. I'd say use one pod per item of clothing. The only downside of this isn't due to the item itself, as after washing the clothes to make them clean and wet, you do have to run a cycle with the pod in then and completely empty wash cycle. Other than that this item is perfect.

Reading some of the more negative reviews, I thought this new approach of chucking in the dye within a container would be problematic. Not so! All in one product (no more kilos of salt to buy) & no more emptying out of the dye into the drum - nice and straightforward with less room for accidents. I've been using Dylon's range of dyes for a few years now and this latest format makes it even more simple than the previous all-in-one pouch. To improve your chances of a consistent result, follow the instructions but be aware dirt or soap residues are the enemies to the dyeing process. So I ensure the wash before dyeing is a thorough one, with no fabric conditioner. You could try using distilled white vinegar as a conditioner replacement (useful when you've run out or for towels that you need to stay absorbent), because it helps by neutralising any remaining soap. Choose the highest spin setting your machine offers to get rid of all of those residues. Then, clean out the detergent/conditioner drawer and run another rinse cycle with just water, selecting the option for 'water plus' if your machine has the function to boost the amount of water used in the rinse process. The aim is to make sure there's nothing but clean detergent free fabric. Place the Dylon pod on top of the freshly-washed well-rinsed damp fabrics and follow the remaining instructions for the experience you've been dyeing to see. 4 wash cycles (cleaning, dyeing, after dye wash, machine clean-out wash) per batch of clothes is a bit energy intensive, so you might want to wait until you've got enough items to rejuvenate or for when it coincides with your scheduled machine maintenance wash and run a limescale treatment during the final clean-out wash killing two birds with one stone, to justify the 'leccy costs. But, it's better than looking scruffy or throwing out garments and your machine will most certainly be free of germs after the whole process. Several cups of tea later... results were uniform colour throughout. I chose the Navy Blue option (the product picture shot isn't that accurate in the colour shade - it appears online as a denim blue). Results were a nice and deep uniform blue to several items all done at the same time (3 pairs of partially faded navy trousers, 2 casual navy shirts that looked a little tatty and a light blue t-shirt). One dye pod was enough to refresh all the garments to look crisp and close to new again without looking artificially over coloured. I was a little apprehensive worried I'd get blotchy results claimed by other reviewers, but following the instructions which state to run on a 40 degrees cotton cycle, the results were as good as Dylon's previous generation all-in-one pouch, minus any dyed fingers. Trust me, the dye powder can get everywhere if it's mishandled, the pod just makes it all nice and simples.

This is absolutely brilliant. Window seat cover was old fashioned floral, and dirty and faded. I was sceptical but followed instructions to a T. It was a simple process. I was quoted £250 to make a new cover and I have this as new for under £10! Highly recommend.

Used it to colour a white shirt and a T-shirt using the deep black colour. The t-shirt is a bluish grey, and the shirt is a dark grey. These are light weight, 0.5kg so should have worked well. It coloured them but not the expected dark colour. It’s ok, not amazing result.

I used this to bring some faded dark clothing back to life and was pleasantly surprised by the results. The colour came out noticeably darker and made the clothes look much fresher overall although it wasn’t back to being pure black. It didn't completely cover some stains I was hoping to hide, so I wouldn't rely on it for that, but it definitely improved the appearance of the fabric and evened out the colour. One thing to be aware of is that it left some black marks on the washing machine door seal after use. However, most of it came off with a quick wipe and a cleaning cycle, so it wasn't a major issue. Overall, a good product if you're looking to refresh or darken clothing rather than perform miracles on stained items.

Dyed 5 pairs of navy chinos as they were starting to fade, easy to do, no mess. Came out as good as new.

I died two canvas Ikea chair covers purple with Ritt dye years ago. They had faded to an ugly grey purple. I wanted to re-dye them but dreaded the pot on stove, add salt, mess. Saw these pods online and wanted to try them. I used one pod per chair cover. I dyed each chair cover separately (in part bc I ordered one pod to try and only ordered another when it worked). I was afraid it wouldn't work because I have a front loader. But when you read the directions, these pods are from the UK and designed for front loaders. It was so easy. Just follow the directions and run an empty cycle after to make sure your washer is clean. Very happy with results.

This item makes dying fabric easy. And the color is long lasting. Throw the packet into the washing machine and let it do its job. I have used this several times and find it to be dependable for color intensity and length of time to last. It’s also easy to clean the washing machine when done. It’s not the cheapest but the end result makes it definitely worth the money.
