What is the difference between the 2 options? They look the same.

You have to look specifically at the shape of the pot. One is rounder and the other looks like it has a lip on the top opening.

what is the little screen for?

There is usually a hole at the bottom of the pots to allow excess water to drain. But you don’t want the soil to fall out. So you put the little screen over the hole before putting soil in (being careful that the screen stays over the hole). Then water will drain but soil stays in.

Are these food safe? Was thinking of using them as water dish

I would not recommend - can't imagine being food quality safe. They have a hole at the bottom for drainage and are not glazed/sealed inside.
