Do I need to use a crimp tool?

I used these to solder two pieces of wire together. However, you can use a crimp tool as well.

What is the length of the barrels?

Approximately 5/8 or .625 of on inch. All three diameters are the same length.

What kind of crimp tool do you need for these? Can you use needlenose or linesman pliers instead?

I usually use a regular crimp tool but in a pinch I use needlenose or pliers
