I'm never using a push plane again.
I'm a Scoutmaster. Every year I turn 11 year olds loose with a $90 piece of western red cedar to make Greenland kayak paddles. Some of them are quater sawn boards that cut pretty easily. Some, like the one pictured, are not. This year I bought three of the Japanese pull planes. They worked so much better on all paddles.! They are easier to adjust, they are lighter and easier to handle. The cut angle is set and just works. We also had plenty of traditional push planes. Our adults, accomplished wood workers, spent so much time adjusting planes it was ridiculous when compared to the ease of use of the pull planes. My push planes are now simply on display. The tools I will use are these pull planes.

Very nice.
This thing is killer. I use it to shave down small chunks of wood to a size where I can widdle it into a chop stick. This thing shaves all kinds of woods very easily. Including pieces of skateboards. I will cut skateboards up and this thing took layers off no issue. The only problem I have with it is adjusting the blade. I haven’t figured out that technique yet but that’s probably user error.

Great hand plane
This was the first Japanese hand plane that I’ve purchased. It is everything I expected and more. The instructions for setting the blade and chip breaker are well written and easy to follow. The blade is sharp and read to got as soon as you get it. Follow the instructions nd you will be pealing off supper thin shavings in no time. I will deffently be getting additional planes for other functions.

Better than expected
I am 72 years old and have been a guild trained jointer- cabinet maker since 1978. This was my first use and purchase of a Japanese plane, and it will not be my last. It is a pleasure to use. I am a convert, no more western planes for me. If you are staring out, they are far too costly in comparison with what these Japanese planes can delivery. The set up takes about an hour. For an older such as myself, pulling rather than pushing is easier on the body and you have better control. The plane irons are substantial so there is no chatter.

Japanese block plane better than American planes
Excellent choice of woodworking tool. Great quality, better design than an american plan, much better to pull than to push. Better control, easy to adjust with just the tap of a small hammer.

Smooth
I may throw out all my sandpaper, well maybe not my drum sander paper. Still need it for dirty wood before running thru planer. Have done two small pieces and no sanding required. Have never had this smooth a finish with sandpaper. Only comparison I can make is to using scrapers. As razor sharp as I can get my antique Stanly and Baily plane blades, I have never got this smooth. Of course they were made for rough fast wood removal. Have an old European style wood plane that I have worked on and made good again that does a smooth job, but nowhere near what this does. May try the Chinese style plane also. Have watched a few you tube vids of them making stuff with all hand tools and never touch sandpaper to anything. just apply finish and done.

Blades have big enough waves to surf.
I knew what I was getting into with this as I had watched setup videos before the purchase. Everything is fine and in good shape. Expect the irons. The chip breaker has a high spot in the middle of the blade back near the edge that is about 1/8 high and the cutting iron has both high and low spots on the edge that is off by an easy 1/16 front and back. I gave up on using my water stones and moved over to my diamond stones for flattening and have already spent about 8 hours on it and have yet to get them flat. At this point it's good enough even though it not really flat in any sense of the word. I have yet to get the chip breaker and iron to sit on each other with out light showing through. Yes I am feeling a bit frustrated. While this is my first Japanese plane I have lots of experience with setting up European planes and chisels both wood working chisels and carving gouges. So while not an expert I am pretty good at flattening blade backs. With all that said it does cut pretty good and leaves a nice finish but it constantly jams and needs to cleared out. Wood bits get stuck between the chipbreaker and iron. I use a bamboo skewer the kind you get at the supermarket for shish kebabs. Clearly I have to learn how to use it properly.

Beautiful plane, as soon as you learn how to adjust the blade.

Muito Top .
Não tenho prática nenhuma com plaina, no início fiquei meio perdido com o ajuste da lâmina . Depois achei o ponto e agora posso dizer que valeu cada centavo gasto .

Good Quality Traditional Plane
Very smooth and fine planing. Requires manual adjustment of the blade at first use with a mallet but this is easily achieved.
