This is an over cloak. I routinely wear cloaks in the spring, fall and early winter. The material velvet is of good quality.

hi，this cape is a Ordinary thickness,if you want to keep warm ,we suggest you choose our 63" cape which is thicker and warmer

Is it soft (both inside and outside)? I have trouble with scratchy fabrics.

the outside is a velvet like material and the inside is not I would not consider it soft but it is not harsh feeling to the skin hope that helps

Will it help keep you warm?

It is a bit on the heavy side so possibly. I used mine during summer for a wizard 5k.
