Teaching Christianity is the most original book Augustine ever wrote. It is not so much a treatise or scholarly work but an instruction manual on how to teach Christianity. He wrote this how to book for those who would be preaching and explaining Christianity. It is entirely based on the bible and helps the reader express its truths of faith with soundproof methodology. It is a book that will help readers to communicate their message in a clear and effective way. Edmund Hill s new translation of Augustine s treatise On Christian Doctrine is superb. His early and mature thought on how to understand scripture and how to communicate that understanding to others is set forth clearly and attractively. The translator has shown great discernment in his choice of words and in their placement. This makes for a smooth reading. Extremely valuable are the scholarly endnotes provided after each of the four books. The new title chosen by Edmund Hill, namely, Teaching Christianity indicates that Augustine is here instructing the African clergy, probably the bishops, how to preach effectively to their congregations. The treatise is not focused on doctrine. Sr. Mary T. Clark, RSCJ Manhattanville College President, Society for Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy Review: Great translation... - This is a fine translation from New City. The library binding is essential with this set, in my opinion. These are lifetime (and longer) books and you don't want cheap paper bindings. This is the book where Augustine goes into the difference between signs and things signified. A classic work on interpreting God's Word. I was disappointed to find most of the introductory material reflective of modern semiotic theory rather than helpful on Augustine. This pedantic approach is true of at times of other New City introductory material, but nowhere moreso in my experience than with this volume. Review: a good one, part of a series - This is one of the volumes in a 50 volume set of the great Saint Augustine published by New City Press. The translator is wonderful, clear and precise. I like the layout of the book. The editor (a Dominican friar) did a msterful job in this project. I cant wait for the rest of the series!

More Christianโs should read this
First thing one should know is that the actually work of Augustine represents only half of the books material. There is a long introduction that outlines and explains Augustineโs goals with this project. Second, this work also included Augustineโs own revisions. Augustine in his later years wrote revisions of many of his works. They serve as theological updates. They are not only helpful new entries in themselves, but a fascinating look into the mind of Augustine and the development of his theology. Lastly, this is nothing like a modern homiletics text book. The entire first โbookโ Augustine presents a theological anthropology of sorts. Only afterwords does he address how one should approach interpreting and teaching scripture.

A very lucid portrayal of a long progression of a journey towards his mature understandings.
The introduction provided an excellent overview of the approach taken by Augustine. Augustine was very lucid with this particular work.
