Whether you are traveling to Great Britain or just want to understand British popular culture, this unique dictionary will answer your questions. British English from A to Zed contains more than 5,500 British terms and their American equivalents, each with a short explanation of the term’s history and an example of its use. The appendixes provide valuable supplemental material with differences between British and American pronunciation, grammar, and spelling as well as terms grouped in specific areas such as currency, weight, and numbers. This dictionary will help you unravel the meanings of: Berk (idiot) Bevvied up (drunk) Crisps (potato chips) Erk (rookie) To judder (to shake) Noughts and crosses (tic-tac-toe) And more! George Bernard Shaw famously said that the British and Americans were “two peoples separated by a common language.” This book bridges that gap. Review: Great British to English reference - I love my British movies, mysteries, telly. This is a handy little reference book for those British terms that you're not sure about the meaning. I have the Kindle edition and I use it all the time. It's fun to just browse through it too. Review: As Described - Purchased as a gift. Recipient loved it

Fun
An amazing book! I think it would be quite useful for someone who is going to live, even work, in England. This is a thorough and well written and well thought-out dictionary. The words and phrases it (the book) chooses to include are ones that might very much confuse an American, because though we speak the same language, I can see it would be easy to make very erroneous assumptions about what a Britisher is referring to! I assume that many of the definitions I read about will be helpful, even essential, to know when visiting London. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that it's more than I will need to know, as only a short-time visitor. I probably should have given it five stars anyway because it does, after all, say "Definitive" in the subtitle!

Great gift!
I bought this book as a gift for my parents! They love to watch British shows and often wondered about some of the words and phrases used, so I thought this would help! They love to pull it out and use it while watching their favorite shows. Definitely recommend!

Didn't serve my purposes
Perhaps that is an unfair rating to give it three stars and not 5. There's nothing wrong with the book; we have the Kindle edition. However, I thought it was more of a dictionary and it is more of an explanation about the differences in our languages. Well there are some words listed that are different from what we commonly use and American English I was hoping to get a book that was filled with British terms like our Webster dictionary. I play a game called Word Chums which is an app and is like the game Scrabble. However they use British terms and I was looking to expand my vocabulary. So the book is not a disappointment on what it is it's just not what I wanted it to be. By the way I highly recommend the app Word Chums!

Helpful
As I watch a lot of British mysteries, every night. Some of the shows have a number of words & phases that I’m not familiar with so I needed a British dictionary. This works perfectly.

Great British Terms and Translate in English Terms.
This is a great book if you are writing a British character like I am and you want kinda a dictionary of what British word means in English. There some words in English that aren't really used or at least where I am from. It a huge help with British terms. I love it.

Good.
Good diccionary of British English words and expresssions. HOWEVER, this was NOT what I wanted or even expected. I want a British English words book that can be compare to American English words as different they are, but with the same meaning.

長い伝統を誇るイギリス/メリカ英語対照辞典
初版は1977年にEnglish Englishという書名でFacts on Fileより発行された(これに伴って翻訳版『イギリス/メリカ英語対照辞典』(研究社)も発行された)。Eugene Ehrlich & Richard Ehrlich の改訂により第2版(2001)と3版(2007)がCheckmark Booksにより発行された。書名もBritish English from A to Zedとなった。本書は第3版の再刷としてSkyhorseより発行された。従って「前書き」に多少の変更がみられるだけで、本体は第3版と同じである(本書の表紙及び扉に版数についての言及が無いので、2017年発行と誤解する人もいるかもしれない)。いずれにしても、本書はNorman Moss :British/ American Language Dictionary (最新版は1990年)と並んで、イギリス英語と米語を比較対照する場合役に立つ辞典であり続けるだろう。

I needed this little book because I'm writing historical fiction ...
I needed this little book because I'm writing historical fiction set in Victorian London, and I'm Canadian. Although I am familiar with some terms, this book has been enormously helpful, and entertaining!

Format is bad
It's a good book and very interesting content. However the Kindle version is formatted very poorly after the letter K to the point that it is unreadable. Wish I'd actually be able to read the latter half of the book.

More Business and Travel Reference than Holiday Reading Material
Somewhat over provided for with a long winded foreword, preface, explanatory notes and introduction, when it eventually gets under way it comprehensively and sometimes wittily covers its subject matter. As holiday reading material, it may be heavy going but as a useful reference for travellers and business people, it would be difficult to fault.
