What is the difference between the red and orange magnetic tool?

Well, I got the red one, so cannot comment off the top of my head. Also, the magnet gets weaker! Not to fear. Though. You can get some other magnet at harbor freight, swrew it in and you're in business.

Will this pick up coins?

This item does not pick up any newer coins, or silver and gold coins.

How do you get it to stay in the extended position? Mine won’t lock into place.

Pull handle and turn clockwise. If it won’t lock then it may be defective.
