Yes, it is consumed slowly, but not that quickly; it appears to be a hard rubber bar containing an abrasive. This item is insane with how well it works! Minimal effort and rust is gone! For real. I was even able to save the multiple, inherited cast iron pans which had been languishing in bins, collecting dust, until this bad boy came into my life. Bought a cast iron griddle skillet at Savers super cheap. It had a few patches of rust. This eraser took care of the spots, so we could season and use the pan, without a full sanding down.

I tried this out as soon as I got it. I searched. YouTube for video demos and found one. I followed his directions and found it works best on very light rust (called ‘flash rust’) and not so well on moderately or heavily rusted surfaces. It’s similar to an eraser in that it leaves behind gritty stuff you’ll need to sipe out before using the pan. I dumped out what I could and wiped out the rest with a paper towel with avocado oil on it. After I got it all out, I heated the pan to try to re-season it and it was nicely black again. This product is most suited to small projects without a lot of surface area. It takes a little elbow grease but it’s not hard to use. It wears down pretty quickly with use so you’ll want to do small areas at a time.

Although I'm usually very careful to keep my Lodge cast iron properly seasoned I did find that when I stored some pans in a closed cupboard with very little air circulation a few rust spots appeared on one or two of my pans. This eraser is great for removing these and with a quick rub down of grapeseed oil and a hour in the oven at 240c (465F) the rust disappeared. Have since moved my pans to a heavy duty steel racking system that stands in the open in my kitchen. The eraser won't get used that often but it will be my first port of call if required.

Wow, what can I say - I was skeptical when ordering, but wow is this ever effective at taking off rust and previous seasoning of cast iron cookware! I had a roommate leave my skillet in the sink while I was away and rusted the pan! I was pissed, but decided to give this a try! Rust is gone and so is the roommate, so a win in my books!
