I've used mine under water many times with no issues afterwards.

Is this expected to be used in addition to your existing metal detector?

Yes, thanks to its small size, the pinpointer head can make the locating which the large size detector cannot do. This makes you more easily get your findings.

battery installation - does the battery "snap" in? I can't see any + - indicators as to which way it goes and doesn't seem to "snap" in either way.

Not sure which detector you have but I have a Garrett Ace 400 and it takes 4 A batteries. I have another detector that takes 2 9 volt batteries. Try both ways. If it came with a manual I would read that to properly install the batteries. There may be a customer service number you can call. Hope you get it up and running. Love the hobby!
