Solid OBD2 Scanner for Basic Diagnostics
I bought this because I wanted a straightforward OBD2 scanner that could read codes, clear codes, and show live data without needing a subscription or some overly complicated app setup. The FOXWELL NT301 does exactly what I needed. It is easy to use, the screen is readable, and it gives enough information to help diagnose check engine lights and basic drivability issues. The live data feature is especially useful because sometimes a code by itself does not tell the whole story. Being able to look at what the sensors are actually doing makes troubleshooting a lot easier. It is not a full professional shop scan tool, but it is not trying to be. For home mechanics, truck owners, DIY repairs, and general vehicle maintenance, it is a very useful tool to keep around. Simple, practical, and worth having in the garage or vehicle. It can save a lot of guessing, and guessing is usually how parts stores sell unnecessary sensors.

Decent affordable universal OBD2 engine scanner. Live data. reads and clears some codes
SUMMARY: Overall a solid ODB2 engine scanner. It's a universal scanner, not brand specific. Instructions aren't very good. (-1 star on that). Realtively intuitive to use for basic code reading and clearing. Live data is useful once you understand it. I used it for 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L L9H AWD, and occasionally a Subaru Outback although I don't recall how well it worked on the Subaru. PROS: * Affordable meter with some good engine scanning capability * Ability to read a bunch of sensors such as MAP Sensor and O2 Sensors and collect live real-time data. * Worked well on my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L L9H AWD * Its a "universal" ODB2 scanner, in theory good for "any" vehicle, useful for households with multiple car brands. CONS: * Can't read or clear codes for the traction control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), or airbags (SRS). * No body or chassis systems: It will not diagnose issues like faulty tire pressure monitors (TPMS), power window regulators, or climate control modules. * No bidirectional controls: You cannot cycle the fuel pump, command an EVAP vent valve test, or actuate mechanical parts such as brakes (to bleed brakes) using this tool. * No ability to add specific brand software through upgrades. KEY CAPABILITIES (Specific to my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L L9H AWD, but generally applicable to all) * Clear the Check Engine Light: Reads, decodes, and resets basic engine diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). * Live data stream: Monitors real-time GM powertrain metrics like engine coolant temperature, RPM, oxygen sensors, mass air flow (MAF), and short/long-term fuel trims. * Misfire counters (Mode 6): Evaluates enhanced Mode 6 data, which can help track down which specific cylinder is causing a rough idle or misfire before it triggers a hard code. * Emissions readiness: Features physical I/M readiness hotkeys to instantly check if the truck's EVAP, oxygen sensor, and catalytic monitors will pass a local smog inspection. LIMITATIONS: (Comments specific to my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2L L9H AWD, but generally applicable to all) * No StabiliTrak / ABS / Airbags: The Denali trim features a complex suspension and safety layout. The NT301 cannot read or clear codes for the StabiliTrak (traction control), anti-lock brakes (ABS), or airbags (SRS). * No body or chassis systems: It will not diagnose truck-specific electronic issues like faulty tire pressure monitors (TPMS), power window regulators, or climate control modules. * No bidirectional controls: You cannot cycle the fuel pump, command an EVAP vent valve test, or actuate mechanical parts using this tool. It's worth the $55, but if you are a serious DIYer, you might find it worth upgrading to a brand specific model and one with addtional features like TPMS diagnostics, ABS and SRS modules, Body and Chasis modules, and more. For my 2009 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 6.2L L9H AWD truck, I ultimately ordered the Foxwell NT501 Elite (GM Brand option) and that appears to be the most capable scanner for that vehicle. It arrives tomorrow. I wanted to be able to clear stabilitrak system and traction control warnings after I unplugged a wheel sensor. I may use the ABS capabilities and the brake bleeding capabilities downstream. That model is about $160, but I am about to put a new engine in the truck, and feel like it's "all the other things" that are potentially going to have issues downstream. Keeping the 301 as well as it's a universal ODB2 engine scanner.

Simple and easy to use! Used this exact same scanner that my brother in law had and loved it. That's why I got this one. Came fast, is easy to use, and priced right!

Saved Me $200 at the Mechanic - Diagnosed My Check Engine Light in 5 Minutes
My check engine light came on a few weeks ago and I immediately started stressing about how much it was going to cost to get it diagnosed and fixed. Last time this happened I took it to a mechanic and they charged me $100 just to run the diagnostic test, then wanted another $300 to fix whatever was wrong. I decided this time I was going to at least figure out what the problem was before taking it anywhere. I did some research and found out about these OBD2 scanners that let you read the error codes yourself. This FOXWELL one had really good reviews and wasn't crazy expensive, so I ordered it. Best automotive purchase I've ever made, hands down. When it arrived I was a little intimidated because I'm not super car-savvy, but it turned out to be incredibly easy to use. You just plug it into the OBD2 port which is usually under the steering wheel (mine was right above the pedals), turn your car to the ON position without starting it, and the scanner powers right up. No batteries needed, it runs off the car's power. The interface is really straightforward. There's a screen and a few buttons, and it walks you through everything. I hit the button to read the codes and within like 30 seconds it showed me exactly what was wrong - turned out I had a faulty oxygen sensor. It gave me the code (P0420) and a description of what it meant. I googled the code and found out it was a pretty common issue and not urgent. I keep this scanner in my center console now along with my registration and insurance papers. It's small enough that it doesn't take up much space and I like having it on hand in case the light comes on again. The cable is long enough that I can have the scanner sitting on my lap while I read it even though the port is down by my feet. What's really cool is that it doesn't just tell you the codes - it also lets you clear them. So after I got the oxygen sensor replaced (which I ended up doing myself for like $40 instead of paying a mechanic), I was able to use the scanner to turn off the check engine light. At some shops they charge you just to turn the light off, which is ridiculous when you can do it yourself in 2 seconds with this tool. The scanner also shows live data which is honestly pretty fascinating even if you're not a car person. You can see your RPM, engine temperature, fuel system status, all kinds of stuff updating in real-time. I've used this feature to check if my car is running okay - like making sure the temperature isn't getting too high on long drives, or seeing how my fuel efficiency changes based on how I'm driving. I've used it on three different cars now - my Honda, my girlfriend's Toyota, and my dad's Ford truck. It worked perfectly on all of them. It's supposed to work on pretty much any car made after 1996 that has an OBD2 port, which is basically every car on the road. Super universal which is nice. My dad was so impressed with it that he bought one for himself. He's always been the type to take his truck to the dealer for everything, but now he checks codes himself first to see if it's something simple before making an appointment. He said it's already paid for itself because he avoided an unnecessary trip to the dealer when his check engine light came on for something minor. The build quality feels solid too. It's not some flimsy plastic thing that feels like it'll break if you drop it. The buttons are responsive and the screen is bright enough to read easily even in daylight. The cable that connects to the car is thick and durable, not like those cheap cables that fray after a few uses. One feature I really appreciate is the definition library. If you get a code you don't understand, it has a built-in database that explains what each code means in plain English. You don't have to immediately run to Google, though I usually do anyway just to get more details about potential fixes. But having that quick reference right on the device is super helpful. It's also been useful for buying used cars. When I was helping my friend shop for a car, we brought this scanner to test drives. Even if the check engine light isn't on, you can use the scanner to see if there are any stored codes or issues that the seller might be hiding. It gives you way more information before you commit to buying. The manual that comes with it is actually pretty detailed. It explains all the functions and has a troubleshooting section. I'm usually the type to throw manuals away but I kept this one in my glove box just in case I need to reference something. For the price, this is an absolute no-brainer if you own a car. Even if you only use it once, it'll probably save you more money than it cost. I've used mine probably 5 times now for various things and it's saved me hundreds of dollars in diagnostic fees alone. The peace of mind of being able to check what's wrong with your car immediately instead of worrying about it until you can get to a shop is worth it by itself. My only regret is not buying this sooner. I've wasted so much money over the years on diagnostic fees for things that turned out to be minor issues. Now I can at least know what I'm dealing with before I take my car anywhere, which gives me way more leverage when talking to mechanics too. They can't try to upsell me on stuff when I already know exactly what the problem is. If you're tired of being in the dark about your car's issues and don't want to keep paying mechanics just to plug in a reader and tell you a code, get one of these. It's simple enough for anyone to use and it'll pay for itself the first time you use it.

Doesn’t have the functionality I thought
The device connects quickly and the instructions are pretty straight forward. It does have a bright display and scans quickly. The reason I’m giving it 3 stars is that it doesn’t have my truck’s manufacturer (Ram). They have Chrysler (same family), but I don’t know if the code designations are the same. When I manually type in the code my truck is displaying (verified the code is correct through a quick Google search), the only thing the scanner says is “refer to vehicle’s manual!”. Well, doy… what would I need the scanner for then?? I don’t know if it is because Chrysler (proper) uses different codes than Ram or not, but that isn’t helpful at all.. Next thing: there is a code change/erase that is supposed to solve the issue I am having, but based on everything I have tinkered with through the scanner, I do not believe the scanner has the ability to erase or change codes. I obviously can’t verify that since it couldn’t even give me the proper code read for my truck in the first place. Overall the scanner is neat, seems functional enough, and is pretty fast as far as scanning goes. But this is really just a glorified standard/basic/simple ODB scanner and I think you can probably get by with something cheaper that can use you phone and an app. I have one of the “simple” ODB scanners as well, and it does the exact same thing as this one, just a couple seconds slower. I wouldn’t recommend this if you are just doing basic scanning/tracking/live data. A cheaper and simpler scanner that connects to your phone will do the exact same thing.
