Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) captured the hearts of America after becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928. Nine years later, her disappearance on an around-the-world flight brought her extraordinary life to an abrupt and mysterious end. Based on a decade of archival research through Earhart's letters, journals, and diaries, and drawing on interviews with the aviator's friends and relatives, East to the Dawn provides the most authoritative and richly textured account of both Earhart's record-setting aviation career and her personal life: her early years with her grandparents, her experiences as a nurse and social worker, her famous marriage to publisher George Putnam, and her secret affair with Gene Vidal, head of the Bureau of Air Commerce. As the Los Angeles Times raved, East to the Dawn is a "fully realized portrait of a truly remarkable woman." Review: A compelling and believable history of the life of a true heroin. - Of the many books I have read on the life and loss of Amelia Earhart “East to the Dawn” is (in my opinion) the most believable and factual “life history” of this dedicated aviation pioneer. While there are, and probably always will be conflicting opinions about the demise of A.E. and F.N. the truth is that the real ending to this story may never be known; did A.E.’s plane crash at sea and sink to depths unknown? were A.E. and F.N. rescued by Japanese forces only to die (in one manner or another) in captivity? Books have been written in support of these and other conclusions, some factual, others less so; some rely on first hand contact with those who say they saw, or say they heard, or say they think, in the end different readers will believe what they believe. In any event an objective reader should conclude that this telling of the story is worth the time it took to read it.... Enjoy... Review: Highly Recommend!!! - Amelia Earhart captured the hearts of the world over 80 years ago and her life and untimely disappearance have always been a topic of great interest and intrigue. I think the author of this book has done a great job of sharing many of the life experiences that molded Amelia's personality and drove her ambitions. I did find one piece of information to be incorrect in regard to Amelia's husband G.P. (George Putnam) in which he was noted as having been married only one more time after Amelia when;in fact, he was married two more times. Overall, the book was a great read and I appreciated the details shared in regard to Amelia's ancestor's as well as her early life. Many opinion's have been written about that last fatal flight and the author did a good job of outlining the known facts leaving the reader to ponder Amelia's final outcome.

This great story written by Susan Butler, is a very well written and very informative.
This tragic event happened many years ago to this fine young lady. And the end of this story is still in the process and yet to be published. I relate to Avation myself for a long time, And The Life Of Amelia Earhart is in the hearts of many. For her love of Flying created a wonderful life for her. East to the Dawn good reading, Thanks Susan.

Great read!
I’ve been looking at this book for awhile and finally decided to buy it. If you’re at all interested in Amelia you will enjoy this book. The timeline and history are spot on. Well written and the story digs into Amelia’s life and journey.

Amazing woman who was created by others
Great book and well researched. Lots of good info on her early family life. Author was kind of easy on Amelia regarding the serious lack of planning for the final and fatal leg of her round the world trip. Was also amazed at how little time Amelia spent looking for her life career. She tried so many different things but never gave any much of a chance.

Very good
This biography flowed very well and the author clearly did her research! My only complaint is she went on several tangents but all in all I have yet to find a better biography on Amelia Earhart.

up-up and unfortunately away....
To simply call Earhart "lady Lindy" is dismissive of her accomplishments. In Susan Butler's wonderful book, you get a glimpse of the real person behind the image that was so carefully crafted by Amelia and GP Putnam. I was so caught up in the story I didn't want it to end. I knew it had to simply because of the circumstances of the disappearance. There are many theories about what happened to Amelia and her navigator, I don't think we will ever know the truth so it's fitting that the mystery continues to surround her and it preserves the legend of Amelia Earhart. Great Read if you are looking for a bio that is worthy of the subject.

BRILLIANT!
BRILLIANT. I have read all the good, and too many of the bad about Amelia. Life long aviator of vintage & modern types, owner of some, restore & aircraft engineer. I have flown in the stream winds area of PNG - AE's flight met environment and knew some of those who reported on her at Lae. Too much focus in past books painted AE as a "2 D" aviator & promoter of women. This work shows the breadth of AE's many diverse abilites, interests and achievements. An extraordinary human being.
