Is this a game as well as a box?

No it is just the box. The game is separate. But for gloomhaven you will want some kind of organizer. It will make the game set up so much faster and less hectic. You have to spend some time putting the smonex box together. But in the end so worth it.

How can I tell which cards go where when organizing the card box?

They have a YouTube video which shows you very roughly where everything goes. The images don't show well, but the acrylic dividers are labeled. For the mini cards, there are letters to organize the monster ability cards, and the symbols follow the icons on the key on the back of the GH rulebook. For the standard cards the dividers are all labeled for the event cards.

Is it supposed to have a-z dividers? like all the letters? mine has lots of missing letters.

The reason there isn’t every letter is there isn’t a monster that would fill every letter.
