When it says "linear", does that refer to lines of alternating polarization? In other words, might one "hack" a passive 3D display with it?

Light is made of wave-forms that vibrate in all directions, and what polarisation does is to limit those vibrations to only one plane. Imagine you through a pile of old music CDs down a grid in the street, the slits in the grid allows only those CDs to pass through it which are lined up with the slits. So the polarising sheet is somewhat like that, it allows light to pass through it that vibrates only in the plane of the polarisation of the sheet. That is why it is called linear. I have no idea whether this could be used to hack a display, or even whether hacking a display is something that can be done, or why. So I can't answer that part. Hope this helps.
