True Comfrey 50 Seeds (Symphytum officinale) Non GMO, Heirloom

There were many crushed seeds in my pack but I still received 52 whole seeds to plant, so they must put extra in. Of those 52, only 18 germinated. The 18 that grew, germinated and grew very quickly (within 2 weeks) but I waited 40 days to be sure after reading about many people having slow germination times. I did follow the instructions and cold stratified the seeds in the refrigerator first, and I have a greenhouse that I start my seeds in for optimal warmth and humidity. I am fully satisfied with 18 plants since comfrey is a notorious spreader. I started these seeds directly into 4” pots rather than seed flats since they quickly develop a long taproot.

I purchased these seeds 3 years ago. I've stored them in a ziplock bag in the refridgerator ever since I got them. Each year I sprout some hoping to have a thriving comfrey patch. They do sprout easily and grow well, even 3 year old seed. Then comes the hard part. We always end up with a cow in the backyard fer one reason or another and turns out cows love comfrey. I guess these are hardy comfrey plants cause I thought the cows had killed them many times but still they come back. The plants tucked in the corner made it through the winter and then lived through cows AND a long drought. But here I am, third year after getting this amazing seed, with little comfrey seedlings in trays in hopes of that ever elusive comfrey patch that my cows keep eating. I'd order this seed again. Very pleased with it.

These seeds had very low direct sow germination rates. This is likely a human error. I strongly recommend creating starts in a controlled environment such as indoors under a grow light during late winter so as to be able to set them out in spring after last frost has passed. They are frost tolerant, however, and the occasional late frost, though it may lightly damage the leaves, it will not likely kill them or do any other kind of significant harm to a healthy plant. The few that did germinate were very slow to grow and took a year to establish, but once established by the second year, these things absolutely take off! My local bees have mostly ignored them, but other beneficial insects such as Assassin Bugs and carnivorous beetles do seem attracted to them, although, the blooms also seem to provide an early season nectar source to cucumber beetles, which, in my opinion, is possibly a good thing! That means that this could be a potential trap crop to lure and eliminate these pests before the growing season truly starts. It also appears two different varieties were mixed into this seed packet, which, at least in my case, I consider a great bonus! I had no idea Comfrey had more than one variety and the contrast in color is really quite nice to look at in the garden.

I grow numerous plants from seed each year and of all kinds of varieties. I gave these seeds the best possible environment to successfully germinate with moist soil, heat mats, lighting and nothing waited weeks and not a single one sprouted. Very disappointed in this product.

I read all the negative reviews before I bought the seeds. But I thought for such a small price I would take a chance. I read instructions how to plant. Figured how so many followed instructions and failed to sprout any seeds, who needs instructions. I did not soak the seeds in water and put in fridge for 2 days. I just put potting soil with pearl lite in Red Plastic cups, put a hole in bottom for draniage. put 2 to 3 seeds per cup. Sat them outside here in florida in January. Watered the cups every other day or so. They got full sun when it was out. Just left them outside 24 hours a day. Day 10 I had a couple pop out of the soil. Day 11 many more. Nothing wrong with these seeds. Maybe soaking them destroyed them, who knows. But mine are growing like they should. Maybe they just like Florida and are glad to be out of California. lol up date. Day 16 over 30 seeds sprouted so far.

I Love my sprouts. I soaked my seeds in water in tea cup, plastic wrap it. In my fridge for a few days. (Forgot about it was in my bottom compartment) almost a week. I noticed the tip of the black seeds became white. Nervous thought it got moldy. I chanced it and sprinkled them over my container/miracle grow dirt. Then sprinkle a little more dirt on top. 3-5 days later. Keeping it moist. It has been sunny and warm. I believe the weather helps. May/June. It truly sprouted. I’m a proud plant mom . Thank you . I highly recommend this seller. Im excited to use these medicine plants. Hey, I was hesitant from reading some of these reviews, saying that it did not sprout… But I’m super happy with my results… I only used half of the seed packet. I anticipate sharing my plants with all my family and friends… Perfect gifts for any occasion holistic healing. It will be a new experience for me for sure.

I planted 30 plants this spring. They were a little slow to grow, not because of the seeds but the weather was harsh. Once they finally got big and bloomed I discovered that my comfrey that I really wanted, was borage, which I did NOT want. On the plus side, I did get a 100% germination rate.
