How much assembly is required

Depends how skilled you are. I'm a woman in my 50's who has built nearly everything in my apartment. That said, they did not provide a crescent wrench and I don't have one so it took a bit longer, AND I was careless and moved a metal bar while I was tightening a bolt and the bar came crashing back down into my scalp. I now have a concussion and a scalp laceration. I finished when I got back from the hospital, so for ME, personally, it took about 6 hours (including the hospital visit) lol

does this unit allow different configurations to change rep start position (difficulty)?

If you adjust the elastic part, the less band, the more rep. I put it on one elastic band, sometimes two. Three can be difficult.
