What is the roll of red felt for?

It is made of felt materials, applied to mute two octaves at once by pushing between the groups of strings with a screwdriver or flattened hammer shank, this is the most efficient way of setting a temperament in, save you a lot of time.

does this work for yamaha piano?

This tuning kit will work with any acoustic piano with tuning pegs and strings, whether it's an upright or not - I hope this answers your question.

Can this be used in any piano? I just got one that is a Yamaha but Im not sure if this kit is universal, is it?

This kit is pretty universal. As long as your pins are accessible, you should have no trouble. Be advised, though, that the tuning wrench is fairly short. This makes it easy to use on a variety of pianos, but on some uprights, you may want to slide a tube of some sort, i.e. a short length of PVC, over the wooden handle for better leverage. Otherwise, you may have to take off the front music stand panel, which on our upright is a royal pain. We had a tuning wrench that was much longer and more robust, but found it was too unwieldy for our upright. This one is just fine.
