The description says it is made from soft maple wood. Is this true maple, or something different?

“Soft Maple” does not refer to any specific species of maple, but rather, is a broad term used to differentiate species from Hard Maple. Hard Maple, refers to one specific type of maple species: Acer saccharum also known as Rock Maple or Sugar Maple, (this is the same tree which is tapped to get maple syrup). (Wood Database)

Can somebody who owns this please share a photo with a bath towel (or other big clothes) hanging on it?

no photo, but it is not quite long enough for a large bath or beach towel.

Lots of bad reviews is it as good as people say?

we love ours! well made of quality wood. this is an unfinished wood item; it needs very light sanding once a year or so on the surfaces the clothes hang on. (wood swells when it gets wet and leaves a texture when in dries back out.)
