I have a twenty year old Jiffy steamer with the water bottle that I would like to update to a newer model. Do you need to remove the hose before emptying the base and is the base heavy on this model?

The base is heavy, yes. I don't know about the hose but I believe you don't need to remove it. I would recommend getting the smaller jiffy steamer with the plastic water container instead of this. This one is not much more powerful and very cumbersome.
