If you are an artist or designer, craftworker or art student, the price of this volume may be the best investment you've ever made. It contains an incredibly rich collection of bright, modern design material that is immediately usable — all selected especially for this volume from historical periods that are popular today, and from such favorite styles as op art and Art Nouveau. And everything in this book is copyright free! Just select the designs you need, use them alone or in combination with other elements, apply them intact or altered to your needs, and repeat individual items in form patterns. All the designs are in line, and can be used as they are or colored to achieve new optical effects. Included are designs based on sprigs of flowers, fruits and vegetables, birds, animals, and scenic; ancient motifs; Pennsylvania Dutch designs; folk art of Mexico, South America, and Scandinavia; dozens of paisley patterns; op art stripes, plaids, and geometrics; Art Nouveau florals and medallions; designs suggestive of cross-stitching, antique valentines, snowflakes, and quilt patterns. There is almost no limit to the ways in which this material can be used. It is suitable for textiles, wallpapers, commercial packaging, crewel-work and needlework patterns, ornamental tiles and chinaware, stencil patterns, leather work, belt buckles, and jewelry, book and record jackets. In fact, it will be useful in almost any instance where illustrative material is needed.

Outstanding book for design inspiration
This is an amazing collection of design ideas from a variety of cultures. I have used it for inspiration for years, and needed to replace my old one. I have made copies for students (I work as a substitute teacher.) to color, and for my face painting idea book. I have used it to inspire my homemade card designs.

Can we get a new copy?
Art students in high school always return to our well loved, worn out copy of this book. The kids asked for a new copy for the art library! They love the design work includedin this book for all applications from clay glazing designs to silk screen patterns.A great, simple book.

Buy it - Recomended
The drawings are all black white and overall the effort put in this book is tremendous . As long as you have these as general ideeas you can feel free to change the fill and outline of these drawings as you wish . The paisleys section has some stunning intricate and beautifull patterns if you were to look for example at page 35-36 it's AMAIZING , I have no regrets.

At first glance I wanted to return it immediately …
… but after a second look inside I saw the possibilities for using this collection of designs.A lot of them are pretty rudimentary, I personally don’t like that. With a few adjustments some will still work for me tho.Given the print quality (the paper is of like a cheap colouring book) and that the content is b/w only I find this softcover book too pricey. On the other hand you buy the permission to use the designs. So overall it’s okay.If I were to buy it again, I would choose an “used” option. Especially since my edition was packed careless. It already had bends and buckles before I even opened it.

These are not some of my favorite things. I mean what on earth are you ...
There are numerous attractive floral motifs (though small and in need of magnification) but at least half the book is devoted to paisleys, geometrics, folk and primitive motifs. These are not some of my favorite things. I mean what on earth are you supposed to do with these paisley things? They are incredibly complex but they aren't beautiful or even entertaining.

Brilliant book of simple design ideas
Exactly what I wanted, originally published nearly 50 years ago so pre-dates the ubiquitous tangle-type designs ...
