PCB Design and Layout Fundamentals for EMC

for the door knobs in the same order to get a folding door to open and close smoothly!!

Some time ago I designed a PCB and had 10 pieces manufactured and assembled. None of them worked. Basically all the serial comms lines were infected with noise from the modular PSU.If you want to save yourself the embarrassment of a similar, devastating experience, get this book! Nowadays I don't do any PCB design without it.

Ask 3 engineers why your product failed an EMC test and you'll get 5 answers, most of them contradictory.This isn't going to replace Tim William's and Howard Johnson's books (required reading if you do this stuff for a living). It doesn't go deep into theory and takes more of a cheat-sheet/cookbook approach. It's a working engineer's take on the subject based on his experience. Having said that, all experience with EMC is hard-earned (and often costly), so that has some value in itself.This book is self-published. It could really use some editing to tidy up the copy, organise some of the ideas into a better flow and cut out repetition - if this material is all new to you, some of it might be hard to follow as it's a bit disjointed.As far as the technical content goes I don't see much to disagree with; Mr Hu has clearly been around the block and it's nice to have another opinion on the areas covered. If you want the theory/detail though (or if the problems with the text will bother you), this probably isn't for you.

A good book that is well written and easy to understand, text is a good readable size with good amount of diagrams and drawings.I bought it for the purpose of designing my own pcbs and help understand the importance of good grounding as well as a reference to help me with other designs and layouts and make the right decision.It has a starting point of components and types advantages/disadvantages and their uses, termination methods between source and loads, pcb zone segregation, frequency paths, pcb layers and proper layout of the layers, connector pin assignment, power supply capacitors, grounding layout and routing, antennas and rf, track impedance, vias, materials for shielding, types of shielding, skin depth of conductors, Analog and digital, high and low frequency.Large variety with all on the basis of EMC, grounding and shielding. There are formulas but not too many of them, could do with a bit more but the diagrams help a lot with the explanation as a visual representation.Overall a great book to have, wether your studying, or a hobbyist but I'm really happy with this book.

There are a few useful board design guidelines, such as multi-layer boards with shielding between the tracks and keeping power and signal grounds separate. However, it only takes a chapter, not a whole book, to cover the subject.
