William Wallace emerges as a complex leader whose enduring legacy reshapes our understanding of Scotland's struggle for independence. This is the true story of William Wallace. William Wallace has always been one of the great heroes of Scottish history. By no means prepared by birth, education or training for leadership, Wallace nevertheless rose to prominence during the Wars of Independence, leading forces which broke the sequence of English victories and inspiring his countrymen in the process. While others yielded and collaborated, Wallace set an example of constancy and perseverence and became the Guardian of Scotland. Even his terrible death in London in 1305 can be seen as a victory as it provided inspiration for the continuance of the struggle against English domination. Despite Wallace's almost mythical status, modern-day perceptions of him are not always based on objective analysis of the historical facts. In this revised and expanded edition of his best-selling biography, Andrew Fisher investigates the man and his times to create a more authentic picture of Wallace than has ever been available previously. Review: William Wallace - A fine collection of pretty much everything known about the historical Sir William Wallace, organized like a biography. I would recommend this book for someone who, like me, loves to read about and research the history of their Scottish ancestors, or who is seeking to read about the real man behind 'Braveheart'. Review: Good read - If you're looking for Braveheart in print, this is not the book for you. This is the story of William Wallace, but a lot of it is conjecture and speculation, because there was not nearly enough written about him in his time. This is based on a lot of research and digging. That being said, it's a good read and if you're interested in the history of England during Wallace's time you will enjoy this book.

Short, concise..
Short and concise history of a man we know little about. Very well written.

Thorough but cumbersome
The book was well researched, but the author's use of complex wording made for very cumbersome reading. Writer's style is for readers with advanced education. A version with simpler wording and structure would make it appeal more to the average person with an intense interest in Scottish history.

I was left in want, but don't blame the author.
I'm glad I read it, but I was left in want... I guess that it was not the author's fault. I came to realization that there just isn't a lot of information on William Wallace. Most of his life and personality will be forever lost to history. However the author did do a great job of explaining the times, circumstances and history of Wallace's era.

Not good
Tedious. Author talks about how many authors make assumptions without evidence then proceeds to make his own assumptions without evidence. I do not recommend.

A well balanced, impartial view of a Scottish legend
This is a well balanced account of the known life and actions of a great Scottish hero, and an iconic figure in general. This is well balanced in two ways, firstly, the accounting is fair and based in objective truth, with some appropriate speculation sprinkled in where there are gaps. While recounting a popular and celebrated period in Scotland's history, the author makes no attempt to glorify or whitewash the nuanced characters of any of the figures involved, on either side of the conflict. Indeed, William Wallace appears almost a parallel to Edward I in many ways, intelligent, god fearing men, capable of great strategic plans and adaptability in the moment, clear on their purpose, ruthless, but capable of unexpected mercy. Figures on both sides are commended on their acts of patriotism and bravery, and called out for their cowardice or treachery. It is also well balanced in its writing, the author navigates the timeline of events in a way that is comfortable, establishing key events with which to orient the reader as the narrative is laid out. There are plenty of references throughout the book, to writings or evidence of what is being proposed, however they are not intrusive, relevant information is often characterised with a modern parlance to make it accessible. Overall I am happy with this accounting and am keen to learn more.
