Sustainable Urbanism and Beyond: Rethinking Cities for the Future

If you're unsure whether this is worth the $50 asking amount, it definitely is. I had a problem with the book detaching from the binding but even still it's well worth if. This should be required reading in all planning programs and departments everywhere.

This is a great collection of essays by top thinkers about culturally important issues related to how we live and build our environment.

"Tigran Haas rather boldly compares the emerging Sustainable Urbanism movement to the Enlightenment, calling for "a time when advancements in science and technology lead us to an emphasis on the power of human reasoning." The topics covered and the solutions proposed by the 67 contributors to this expansive new work are similarly audacious, prescribing far-reaching new approaches not just by architects, urban planners and designers, but by entire societies, from the glittering office towers of London and New York to the gritty alleyways of sub-Saharan Africa's sprawling capitals."Kevin Billinghurst, KTH News & Events, 2012 (Reproduced by Permission)"Four years ago Tigran Haas produced a big, generously illustrated book, New Urbanism and Beyond, in which 68 essayists--many of them architects, planners, or theorists--examined New Urbanism from a multitudeof perspectives. It's one of the most stimulating, wide-ranging books ever published about New Urbanism...Now Haas, who teaches architecture, town planning, and urban design theory at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, has put together a second volume in the same format: The hefty, illustrated Sustainable Urbanism and Beyond presents 59 essays by 76 authors from across the globe. Like its predecessor, this is a handsome production--but it's much more worrisome about the future...There's a lot of lively, pointed debate in Sustainable Urbanism, and there are quite a few stimulating tangents. These help relieve the grimness that inevitably attaches to the book's sometimes unstated central idea: Humanity has failed to fully tackle 'the greatest crisis in the history of mankind and the greatest threat to the natural eco-balance of our planet and our built environment'."PHILIP LANGDON, Better! Cities & Towns, September Issue, 2012 (Reproduced by Permission)"Five great books about going green - The dust jacket on this 318-page book describes it as a "primer," though it's much more robust in its intellectual ambition than that word suggests. The essays, more than 60, dig deep into such topics as "The marriage of economic growth and sustainable development" (by Christopher B. Leinberger, a fellow at Brookings Institute in Washington D.C.) and "The latest word: the relevance of new urbanism" (by masterplanner Dhiru A. Thadani of Maryland). Egg-heady? Yes. Relevant? Absolutely."Azure Magazine (Design, Architecture, Interiors, Curiosity), 2012 by Catherine Osborne (Reproduced by Permission)"Turing away from climate change and the intriguing activities of the deniers, I'd like to recommend the following book: Sustainable Urbanism and Beyond: Rethinking Cities for the Future. It is a beautiful and lavishing produced 300+ page book that show cases the create ways we can (potentially) respond to the challenges of climate change and resource depletion. It would have to be one of my favorite books I've read this year."Watching the Deniers: Dispatches from the climate change debate Blog (Reproduced by Permission)"Heavyweight thinking...Tigran Haas of KTH - Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has edited a massive anthology with 75 distinguished contributors...This book is well worth picking up and reading, but be aware that it is not a mosaic picturing a sustainable future.Rather, it is a collection of beautiful glass shards awaiting assembly."PLANNING Magazine, NY December 2012 (Reproduced by Permission)
