In this classic Southern cookbook, the โfirst lady of Southern cookingโ (NPR) shares the seasonal recipes from a childhood spent in a small farming community settled by freed slaves. She shows us how to recreate these timeless dishes in our own kitchensโusing natural ingredients, embracing the seasons, and cultivating community. With a preface by Judith Jones and foreword by Alice Waters. With menus for the four seasons, Miss Lewis (as she was almost universally known) shares the ways her family prepared and enjoyed food, savoring the delights of each special time of year. From the fresh taste of springโthe first wild mushrooms and field greensโto the feasts of summerโgarden-ripe vegetables and fresh blackberry cobblerโand from the harvest of fallโbaked country ham and roasted newly dug sweet potatoesโto the hearty fare of winterโstews, soups, and baked beansโLewis sets down these marvelous dishes in loving detail. Here are recipes for Corn Pone and Crispy Biscuits, Sweet Potato Casserole and Hot Buttered Beets, Pan-Braised Spareribs, Chicken with Dumplings, Rhubarb Pie, and Brandied Peaches. Dishes are organized into more than 30 seasonal menus, such as A Late Spring Lunch After Wild-Mushroom Picking, A Midsummer Sunday Breakfast, A Christmas Eve Supper, and an Emancipation Day Dinner. In this seminal work, Edna Lewis shows us precisely how to recover, in our own country or city or suburban kitchens, the taste of the fresh, good, and distinctly American cooking that she grew up with. Review: Southern Staple - Edna Lewis was a scion of true Southern cooking. This book was filled with great menus and recipes. Itโs become my go-to cookbook whenever I want to make a Southern meal. Learning To Cook, Like Edna Lewis
Edna Lewis, "The Taste of Country Cooking", is probably the best cookbook I own, and I have a cookbook library. Ms. Lewis cookbook reads like a novel. She captures the feelings of long ago times, and with chores on the farm that was fun because of all the family lived under one roof. Uncles, aunt, cousins,...just anyone with family ties lived together and shared all the work. She said it didn't seem like work because there was enough people to help out, that there was a lot of time to go fishing and singing and playing the upright piano. Her Grandfather, was a freed slave that built the huge house they all lived in. It is a wonderful book to read and the recipes are precise and delightful to make. I Love This Lady and Her Book, and I wish that I could have met her before she passed. I will honor her by making the recipes she put down and remember her as I eat my way through her lovely cookbook. Thank You, Sandy Hatton

BEWARE!!! ONLY SOUTHERN DESSERTS; NO MEALS!!!!
I gave it four stars because its only southern desserts. There is no collard or mustard greens, no southern friend chicken fried in lard, no southern baked mac n cheese, no southern brown rice or white buttered rice, no southern corn bread, no southern gravy steak or lamb. No southern dumplings etc.... nothing but desserts. So tis' why I gave it four stars and only because the desserts are a good collection. I purchased so my teens can learn or if they forgot what I have taught them they may go back and review while I am at work. Now my kids gonna have diabetes lol. Honestly if you want some good southern desserts *only*, this is a great book. If your looking for some great ol' southern meals, then DO NOT PURCHASE!!! you will not recieve it AT ALL whithen this book.

Cookbook that Reads as Novel
Cookbooks are pretty standard and typical, right? Recipe with maybe a picture. Not when Edna Lewis writes one. She weaves personal stories in with each recipe making the chef/reader feel connected to her, the food, and the history of each dish. With recipes revolving around what fruits and vegetables are locally in season, you're bound to make delicious food. She discusses Southern classics, but also why they are classics and the origin of some dishes may surprise you. Whether you want a good read, to make delicious food, or just have something new to cook, you need this cookbook! However...I must attach this warning: every cookbook you purchase AFTER this book will be a terrible disappointment.

Taste of Country cookbook
Bought as gift wife. It was a total surprise and she loves it. She was impressed that it not only has the recipes in it but also some backstory behind the recipes.

Beautiful memories and wonderful recipes
A cook book worth reading just for the prose. And recipes that really work to make wonderful food. The introduction to each chapter contains warm remembrances of "life on the farm" as the was growing up as a freed slave's daughter. She gives credit for many of the recipes to her mother, who must have been a wonderful cook. My go-to book for how to make American Southern cooking classics like biscuits, including how to make baking powder and which flour to use so your biscuits will rise properly and be delicious! Learn what combination of dishes are appropriate for every occasion, "back in the day" and for today as well for your next gathering from this book and you can't go wrong!

An absolute classic - an assured and generous voice. ...
An absolute classic - an assured and generous voice. Shows that Southern cooking is grounded in sophistication, seasonality, and localness. A real treat just to read and listen to an important voice.

Never heard of Edna Lewis until her legacy was discussed in the recent episode of Top Chef. Immediately ordered the book. Such a treasure trove of information about the southern cuisine and the way it is presented in seasons coz of the availability of fresh produce. Loved it. Edna is comparable to Julia Child. How she brought southern cuisine to limelight just like Julia did to french cuisine. This is not just a recipe book, we get a glimpse of the author's life too. Just tried the biscuits and they are to die for.
