Instant Relief and Very Easy to Use
This Vicks personal steam inhaler works amazingly well for congestion and sinus relief. The warm steam provides instant comfort, and using it with the VapoPad makes breathing much easier. It’s compact, simple to set up, and perfect for quick relief at home. I love that it’s drug-free and targeted, so I can use it whenever I need. Great quality as expected from Vicks—highly recommended for anyone dealing with allergies or colds!

Does mostly what it claims, but unfortunately not very effective for me.
I bought this on a whim at 1:00am one night as I thought there had to be a better way to inhale steam, as the urgent care had suggested to clear out my sinuses, than to lean over a boiling pot of water, or waste a bunch of water in a shower. Technically this does what it claims as far as producing steam for at least 15 minutes. If you are traveling and feel that inhaling steam is helpful for you, then this would probably be a decent alternative. If you are home though, I would save the $60 this costs because I think the old fashioned pot of boiling water on the stove works better, with a hot shower probably the best overall. I hoped using this would be easier in that I could sit more conformably somewhere while using it, and that it would be less dangerous than leaning somewhat awkwardly over a large amount of open boiling water. In practice however, I felt I had to strain my neck over it in order to get close enough to the output of steam to actually notice any potential benefit. After 15+ minutes of that, the back of my head and neck hurt. It does use MUCH less water than I ended up boiling, so if you would happen to spill it, it would presumably be safer in that regard though. There were a lot of warnings about how hot the base and everything about it was because it is just a glorified coffee pot/water heater, but I found that the base didn't really get hot on the outside. It only holds a VERY small amount of water. So little that I thought it could never last the full 15 minutes that was suggested. But to my surprise it was still going after 20 minutes, and was even still about half full. My main issue is that it didn't produce a lot of volume of steam, so I had to get pretty close to it to feel like I was actually breathing in the steamed/humid air. Steam is of course very hot, so it was a balance of how close I could stand to be to it versus getting any benefit. I would say the small amount of false advertising is that the lady on the box seems to be blissfully inhaling the steam from 6-8 inches away from it, but even with it fully open as much as possible, I had to strain my neck to be directly over it about an inch or so above it. I think the best overall method is a hot shower since it fills the whole room with humidity without having to be directly in the path of very hot steam. I'm not one for really hot showers though, and I hate the idea of wasting water in order to just sit in a hot steamy room either. So this is at least another option. I comes with one sample of the scented menthol booster thing, but I did not try it, so I'm not sure if it makes much difference. Overall the last issue is the same with any of the methods in that at least for me, my nose barely gets that much clearer while using it, and then immediately clogs back up a few minutes after stopping. So it all seems like a lot of trouble for very little, if any benefit.

Relief for symptoms of Bronchitis
I've been using this for 5 days quite a bit (since 4/19/14) with the Kaz pads. I'm on Spring Break now and have the time to do so. It has helped tremendously to open up the respiratory/bronchial passages so that I can breathe much better. On 4/12 and 4/13, I was having severe problems breathing, but was too weak to go to urgent care to get help. I used a liquid supplement called respiratory complex that I get at Whole Foods Market along with Oregano oil and Olive leaf extract (extremely strong--recommend the capsules) in addition to other supplements. Those helped, but I did finally go to urgent care (no choice, had to get a doctor's excuse for work) and had treatments there for a few hours. Even after all the supplements, treatments and prescriptions, I noticed a significant difference after using this vaporizer, even more so with the Kaz pads. I only wish that I had known years ago about using these vaporizers for symptoms of bronchitis. It could have alleviated symptoms and prevented a lot of suffering. I've had bronchitis many times and pneumonia a few times, starting at 4 years old. I've never smoked. Perhaps it was as a result of breathing smog in Southern California. It was a lot worse in the 1960's when I first was struck with respiratory problems. I highly recommend this vaporizer with the Kaz pads for temporarily alleviating the symptoms of bronchitis--especially for opening up the breathing passages and reducing coughing. Just a few minutes ago, I added eucalyptus oil to the Kaz pad, even though they advise against it. I used the vaporizer with this pad and it helped. I do recommend, as another reviewer noted, keeping your eyes closed when using oils on the pad. They are quite strong and best to keep out of your eyes. They also have Vick's Vaposteam, designed to be used with vaporizers. That's obviously not pure water. (I haven't had a chance to use it as it hasn't arrived yet, even though it was ordered at the same time).

pretty good one
I got my Vicks Steam Inhaler a few days ago. I had been choosing between it and the Mabis one. However, the latter costs $20 more so I decided to go with this one considering almost identical review ratings. I would rate it with 4.5 starts, not with 5. There is still a little room for improvement. It is pretty compact and quick. It starts producing steam in about 4 minutes. Yes, you can regulate the amount of steam. But I found that hot air makes me breath faster and, as a result, there is not enough steam produced by the machine between my breaths. Fortunately, I came up with a nice and simple solution. The mask has a few holes in it to mix the steam with some fresh air. If I cover with my fingers some or all three holes I get enough steam with every inhalation. It's pretty convenient, at least, for me and allows to (manually) regulate the amount of steam. Another thing important for me was a possibility to use oil. Neither Vicks or Mabis inhaler assume that you can directly add aroma oil to water. Both brands sale their own inhaler pads designed to work with their machines. But the choice of oils is very limited. By the way, the Vicks Inhaler comes with a disposable pad good for one time use. Some people reported that they had still added a few drops of oil. For some it worked fine, for the others it didn't work that well screwing in some way the water heating surface. What I did is I bought this refill kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XPX1HG) and it's been working great for me. You can put a pad directly on the plastic thing with the holes the steam comes out. The only difference with the original pad is form but it works great. It does not mess with the water heating surface and you can refill those cotton pads with any oil you want. For the future, I'm going to buy cotton pads and oil separately. I prefer to use calendula and there is no pads or kits coming with calendula extract.

Steamer works as expected to relieve congestion.
Pros: Price, ease of use. Lever to adjust steam flow. Cons: Requires care to avoid steam burns which is partially accomplished by continually adjusting the distance between your face and the mask. Mild plastic smell. Needs an auto shutoff. Other: I do not consider the restriction to place steamer on a water resistant table or other stable flat surface as a con. At this price I don't expect extensive safety features required to keep from spilling boiling water on the user when hand-held. I might pay a few dollars more for a timer or auto-shutoff. I bought this to relieve congested sinuses. I did not use any of the Vicks add-in fragrances. I followed the directions carefully, including NOT pressing my face against the soft mask at the top AND NOT hand-holding the device (set on a non-movable waterproof surface). I also used the adjustment lever to cut the steam to my face to about 30% of wide open. The steam loosened my sinus congestion and the relief lasted for a couple of hours. I was pleased that this part worked as expected. So far, I have not experienced any cracking in the plastic that other reviewers have described. I checked with my doctor, and he said he could see not harm in using it for a few days at a time. Originally, I intended to use this each evening and each morning for congestion. I had one mishap. I put water in the steamer and turned it on the heat (3-5 minutes). Unfortunately, when I sat down to wait, I feel asleep, and the device ran dry. We have a lot of calcium in our water and the calcium deposits peeled away from the center heating element. However, I could see no cracks or other damage to the interior of the water reservoir. When I tried the steamer, it worked perfectly, and the plastic smell was lighter or unchanged. Concerns: The mild plastic odor suggest that some chemical is released by the steamer. Suggestions to the manufacturer: The reservoir is very small, and so the steamer needs an auto shutoff in case it runs dry. Also a beep to indicate that the reservoir is up to steam-producing temperature would be useful. I would like a timer or perhaps beeps sounded at 5 minute intervals to help time how long I've been breathing steam. I deducted one star for the plastic odor and another star for not having a run-dry shutoff.

Essential for Singers
This steam inhaler singlehandedly saved me from failing my Voice Jury. I am studying vocal music ed, and this semester I was participating in vocal ensembles for about 20 hours a week. This season, pollen was RECORD high in Philly, and my allergies were going crazy. Then I got sick, and I could not phonate my vocal cords at times. I bought this steam inhaler and started using it for 15 minutes 2x a day, and it helped me cope with my sickness and pass my voice jury!! I used to have a room vaporizer that I would leave on at night, but this is very portable and uses a heck of a lot less energy. PROS: inexpensive to purchase, inexpensive to run (energy-wise), variable steam output, comfortable face mask, portable. CONS: this is probably the fault of the packaging, but my plastic face mask was permanently bent away from the proper ergonomic shape for the face, but luckily the plastic is soft enough to conform to any shape, just a bit less comfortable than I'd hoped. The steam can get a little to hot to bear, and there's no way to monitor the temperature, but there is a lever to adjust the volume of steam that is released. I also wish that the electrical cord was longer, because it says to not use an extension cord. This can sometimes be annoying, because you have to set up the unit close enough to an outlet.

Worked great until a manufacturer's defect turned it into a sour experience.
I loved it. It worked great! It helped my rhinitis due to a deviated septum. Until the plastic tabs that held the top portion to the base started cracking and breaking off. I've bought this in March, it is now November. Still under warranty, right? Yes, it is. I've sent photos of the broken tabs. The plastic became brittle over the months for some reason, so I contacted Kaz, who is the parent company of this Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler. They were polite--mostly because the emails were from a pre-written script. I've sent them all my information: address, photos, copy of receipt, date code that's stamped on the plug of the unit. Then they want me to send it in so they can send me a replacement. So this item was close to $30 but not quite $30 when I bought it. The shipping would have cost me approximately $15 to ship it to Kaz for a replacement. So why should I pay for shipping a defective item to the manufacturer that would cost more than half the price of the unit? I shouldn't be paying for shipping the defective item back to the manufacturer due to a manufacturer's defect. Kaz customer rep told me it's the standard warranty procedure many other major companies use. I've written back to them telling them over the last 20 years, Bionaire/Sunbeam, Oxo, Vornado, Simplehuman, and Waterpik have never told me to pay for shipping a defective unit back to them. If I dropped the unit and broke it, that's my fault. This is a manufacturer's defect (not my fault) and they want me to pay for shipping the unit to them. So before you buy any of the Kaz's line of products, just hope that you will never have to send your unit in because of a manufacturer's defect. Their warranty is inferior to other great companies. They lack the integrity other major companies possess. UPDATE: So I've tried to post a review on Vicks website on my experience dealing with their company. Pressed "submit review" and guess what came back!?! "Error submitting review." Their website wouldn't allow me to post an unfavorable review!
