Is the frame made out of wood or is it plastic made to look like wood?

The description says "engineered wood". It is a very nice frame with a wood grain but is not real wood.

Is this frame thick enough to be used as a shadowbox?

Dear Customer, sorry to tell you that it is not thick enough to be a shadowbox. The depth is about 0.35 inches.

I want to frame a hand knitted 5 x 7 piece of fabric in the box. Is the frame deep and sturdy enough to secure it?

This frame was a little flimsy. I would try to get a frame made of solid wood for your fabric. It would be more secure.
