They could be, their very nice for the money. Most professional boards are electronic now day and are very expensive.

Perfect, the board is tournament size and so is 3.75" of King/Queen height.

what are the dimensions of the squares?

The squares are 50 mm (about 2 inches roughly). It is a beautiful chessboard and very well made. Excellent bargain for the price. You will probably need to re-glue the felt pads on the bottom of the board, as I had to do that with mine. Otherwise, a chessboard to be proud of and to display, looks much more expensive than it costs. I hope you buy one! Glad I could help.
