Great camping/survival knife
This Ranger 78 is very much a workhorse. It's not subtle. It just gets stuff done. The grip is pretty awesome. The blade itself is large, sturdy, and holds an edge particularly well for a SAK. It's also a locking blade, which is unusual for SAKs, but quite nice. The release is opened via depressing the actual SAK symbol on the handle. I've used this blade for general camp tasks. The one hand open grip is nice, btw The saw is pretty efficient. It's definitely built for durability over flexibility, but is also very sharp and can chew through wood. Unlike the saw on the mid sized SAKs, this one is large enough to get enough friction to not really grab too much when sawing. As a rule, if the wood is similar to or smaller in diameter than the blade is long, this saw will work like a champ. The back can be used with a fire steel as well. The driver/can opener/bottle opener/wire stripper duo is a classic and always useful. This one also features the awl, an all around great drill, which is probably how you'll use it. And, an actual philips head. The angle can maybe be awkward, but it's a great tool. The toothpick and tweezers pretty much stay where they are. Without modifying the inside of the scales, you won't be able to add something like a Tortoise Gear fire steel. They just don't fit all the way. Anyway, this is my, 'I plan to be out hiking/camping for a while, and/or in more remote areas' addition to my kit as well as something I'll take on construction sites with me. Very versatile in a few settings

Best Swiss Army Knife
The best Swiss Army Knife available for camping. Or everyday use. Largest blade, larger saw (camping), bottle opener, can opener, etc.

Awesome knife. Great size, Great grip. Just the right tools. Looks and feels Great.
Most of my carry knives are carbon steel rather than stainless, but who doesn’t want a Swiss Army knife? But so many of these are novelty knives, or some compact secondary carry multitools. Not this one. This has quickly become one of my favourite EDC knives. This model is configured similarly to the actual Swiss Army issue, and the size and grip feel good in the hand, are really useful. The grip is particularly nice. Not a lot of novelty tools on this. I find even the tooth pick and the tweezers hand to have around when doing fine work. The saw is large enough to actually be useful. I also find myself going for this knife when I need a quick screwdriver, which actually surprised me. The four inch blade is sturdy and just what I need in the field. Actually, the only common multitool item I feel like I am missing out on is pliers. But all such multitools are compromises, and this one works for me. Maybe a Leatherman Squirt would be sufficient as to round it out, but even if they offered this knife with pliers I wouldn’t want them as it would ruin the grip and feel of the knife. The one quibble I have is the knife locking mechanism. It is super sturdy, and that is the most important thing, but a bit clumsy to release to close the knife. Really a minor quibble for an awesome knife. I am very happy with it.

Quality, value and dependablity
First off this is my wife’s account so I can say she didn’t review this knife.. lol. The Ranger grip is a larger version of the Trekker line of knives, all are great tools if you call you knives tools. This knife is my hiking carry knife, it’s big it’s sharp and it works well. The saw works well and dependable, the other tools are functional and placed well. If you don’t like a big bulky pocket in your pocket this is not your knife, I recommend a sheath for your belt, or a place in your pack. This is not your dads Swiss Army knife.. The one handed opening moves well after a few openings and the push button to close works well.. I have also reviewed the One hand Trekker and this falls into the same cool factor as that, please see that review if you are trying to decide between the two. Hope this helps .. Rocco

Great knife
Always been happy with Victorinox quality. This doesn't disappoint. Super sharp right out of the box. Good size with great grip. It has a little weight to it. You know you're holding something of quality. Best price I've seen.

Love it :)
Out of the box, Bought it on Amazon and it came two days later as advertised. The quality is better than expectations. All the blades open easily, but there is no looseness or any cheapening affects that ive noticed. One person complained that you can grip and squeeze the knife and feel the give in their hand, but the way i hold a knife for 90% of my work is usually with the tip of my finger on the spine. Even chipping or whittling, i try to have a more delicate grip on the knife where my leverage never involved squeezing. therefore, i dont give it a death grip, so im perfectly ok with the durability of the knife. I actually felt excited about the knife when i held it. One of my more proud purchases. one of the inspirations for even looking at Victorinox for the knife is from a bushcrafting perspective, a tool has to serve multiple purposes. I have an 8 year old and this knife is definetly too big for him, but i am looking at a medium size knife for him. The only thing i may ever question about the knife is that i went with the 78 over the 79 because I didnt realize the bushcrafting uses for a corkscrew vice the philips screwdriver... Just google the uses for a corkscrew....Also, thanks to Felix Immler (he sells a book here on amazon, and he has a youtube channel) for turning me on to this knife..

It’s All You Will Need 90% of The Time
I’m a big fan of Swiss Army knives. I own about a dozen different models. This one is now my absolute favorite. It IS possible to have to many tools on a device. This one has a longer locking blade knife, a flathead and a Phillips head, can opener, toothpick and tweezers. It has everything you will need 90% of the time but it’s not to thick to carry in your pocket. Also it fits your hand better and it’s longer.

A beast for camping
This exemplifies Victorinox quality. It is a beast. The saw is excellent. Much better than the little ones you get on some of the Leatherman multi-tools. The knife locks very well and seems to hold an edge well. It is large enough that holding on to it while using the saw or knife is excellent. It has all the camping tools I need (saw, knife, bottle & can opener, and awl). I've used all of them. I don't care for the plastic toothpick or flimsy tweezers. I also feel I got it for a very good price.
