just got my new clock. doesnt work. what am i doing wrong

Is the clock in a well lit area? It has a Day/Night sensor, so it will not work in a Dark area

How do you set the clock so that the chirp corresponds to the correct bird?

If you can't read the back of the clock, here is what it says. It does work. Remove the batteries. Set the clock to 12:50. Place batteries back in. Set the clock to the correct time, stopping at the top of each hour and allow each bird to chirp / sing. Be sure to turn the hands clockwise. The sound will then match the bird picture for each hour. My motto: If all else fails, read the instructions!

Are the birds north American birds?

Yes, it includes the following: Summer Tanager, Song Sparrow, Purple Martin, American Goldfinch, Wood Thrush, Common Yellowthroat, Eastern Meadowlark, Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Red-Wing Blackbird, Yellow Warbler and Hermit Thrush.

is it quiet when it ticks

The second hand does tick. It is asoft tick. I never hear it across the room but if you get real close you can hear it.
