Ambiance!

Baker and Jordan have a lot in common musically. They both have their roots in bop, having played with Charlie Parker, are both lyrical, spare melodists and choose material that is atmospheric with an underlying melancholy. I'm not familiar with Norman Fearington, on drums, but he fits in nicely. NHOP provides superb support as usual but solos minimally. The emphasis is on the arrangements and group cohesion. The tunes are all by Jordan - 'No Problem' being the best known. Duke Jordan has a lyrical, unforced style. His intros to many bop tunes when he played with Parker are such perfect summations of what was to come that they have been repeated ever since as though they were part of the original compositions. Despite the many times he's played his own music he always seems to approach it differently. There is always a surprise turn that the listener can't foresee but afterward marvels at the inevitability of it. Jordan brings out the best in Baker, which under the right conditions can be very good. His playing on this disc should satisfy his followers and make some new ones. Needless to say, with a Steeplechase product you get excellent stereo sound.

Uno dei migliori dischi di Chet Baker, e sicuramente uno dei migliori dell'ultimo Chet Baker. Belle le composizioni di Duke Jordan, ottimo l'interplay tra i musicisti, fantastici soli di piano e di tromba e da non sottovalutare il contributo di un batterista " minore" ma validissimo. Ottima registrazione; consigliato sicuramente.

Chet baker en su última etapa nunca defraudó...sus notas, provistas de una melancolía indeleble fruto de sus desarraigadas experiencias vitales y de una ejecución musical profundamente emotiva, quedarán para la posteridad .
